Google is your friend!
But seriously, I also ascribe to the "don't give them a reason" philosophy. Fortunately in Texas they've got an almost all-black plate (with white letters) that blends right in to the grill. |

On dash yes. It's a game of Russian Roulette.

Just don't run the front plate at all. Dont live in fear that a cop is going to pull you over for that. I've left mine off all my cars and never had an issue.

But... Don't come crying and whining that you were harassed, profiled, picked on or in any other way singled out if you do get a ticket for not having it.

I also always thought the danger in putting the tag on your dash is if you do get nabbed for it, you've essentially told the cop you know the law, and you've chosen to try and circumvent it.
If you don't have a front tag at all, you can at least reasonably play dumb. I did know a guy who put his front tag and an intentionally broken bracket in his trunk. The rare times he got pulled over he'd tell the cop, "Oh, the bracket just broke off and I haven't had a chance to replace it. It's in the trunk right now if you want to see." |

I live in California and laws are much much stricter here. I have had numerous friends get pulled over with no license plate. I would check your local laws because there is a certain distance and height it must be.

Knock on wood, never put front license plate on my car I bought new in 2004, and not on my Fr-s in Aug of 2013, no tickets. I believe it's a fix it ticket with a small fine. Most of the time I think it comes from parking enforcement, although I've had several parking tickets with no front plate violation. Now watch, I'll get a ticket tomorrow for no front license plate!

I once got a ticket while the car was street parked in front of my house. I walked out to my car to go to work and there was a ticket under my wiper blade. Ever since then I bought the Grimmspeed license plate relocator kit. My OCD symmetry alarms were going off for a couple weeks but eventually it grew on me and now I prefer the look. People do ask me all the time, "Why do you have your license offset?" I just tell them that it's to prevent them from drilling the bumper and doesn't block the radiator.

When I got my FR-S I had to drive it without the front plate a few days.
I got pulled over within 3 hours of driving it out of the dealership. The ticket was something like $130 but I have the option install it correctly, show a photo at court, and have the ticket dismissed. So its basically a fix-it ticket unless you're too rich to bother. I had to drive without front plate for 1 more week and did not get any attention from cops in that time. Guess sometimes you get unlucky. Keeping it on dash is very unsafe as @pushrod mentioned. The reason I had to drive my new FR-S without front plates is because I transferred plates from my old FR-S which got T-boned by a red light runner. The impact felt like a punch and sent my glasses off my face. Nothing in the car was where I left it before. You don't want a plate flying in any random direction in a situation like that! Secure it well if you must. |
