Will the next Miata be a hybrid or EV?
Jalopnik quotes Motor1 quoting a Mazda spokesman...
That’s according to Motor1, which obtained the following statement from Mazda this week: Mazda is seeking to electrify the MX-5 Miata in an effort to have all models feature a form of electrification by 2030. We will work hard to make it a lightweight, affordable, open two-seater sports car in order to meet the needs of customers. Could our twins be the last lightweight, affordable, RWD, ICE, sportscar?

They're probably waiting for a lighter solid state battery to make this possible, although it will probably add 500 lbs regardless.

Extremely happy is a nicer way to say that. I'm not so sure he'd be smiling with 450 lbs of battery.

Other than the source being the normal clickbait site telephone game it does not say that it was doing away with the ICE Miata. It just says all model will "feature" some form of electrification.
Pretty optimistic to think the Twins will still be around in 2030 anyway. Even if they are you can not assume they will still be ICE either

Wow, a Miata is gay joke? A classic.
Drop the engine. Put a 200hp motor and some batteries in the back. Put some more batteries down the spine and in the front. 50kwh is plenty. It'll weigh 2700 lbs if done right and be a hell of a lot more fun than the gas version.

How many miles do people put on their Miatas each month?
If there is any car that is not a road-tripper and would make an excellent EV, it is probably the Miata. Not that people don't road trip them or it is bad for it, but it doesn't exactly have a ton of storage. Having a small and lightweight roadster with a small battery pack in the floor would only help to make it an even better driver's car. But we are probably a ways away. They will refresh the car in the next few years with revised facias and interior. That will keep the car around another 5-ish years. So yea, by the time a true "next-gen" arrives, being an EV would be reasonable as battery tech will probably have reached an intersection point where Cost and Range either matches or improves upon that of ICEs. |

I'm all for a low range lightweight fun EV, but my go-to fun roads are 90 miles away from home, giving me around 250 miles roundtrip for a fun time in the twisties. Once (if?) such sports cars start showing up I'd really need to see if they will work for that route - I really don't have decent twisties close by here in Ohio.

If that is the case then call me a homo. I would love a perma-hardtop ND Miata with a K motor revving to 10k.
