Ever drive or own a 3000GT?

It was on my short list for a while. Did I miss anything?

I always wanted a 3000GT and a friend of mine was selling a VR-4. I being 18 with two speeding tickets and the VR-4 having twin turbos was an immediate no from every car insurance company I called.

Its my on my dream list for my Top Ten Import garage.. Some day.

It is worth getting now they are cheaper. Just need to find one with an owner that took care of it, they are all high mileage cars now. So tempted to get a VR4 for a winter car, but I have a hard time paying anything for a 150,000 mile car no matter how great shape it is in.

? All the clean VR-4's (94+style) around here have rocketed in value this year.

Really? That is odd. I was really looking at them a year or two ago, decided against buying a car with that many miles, and stopped paying attention. I wonder why values increased.

A buddy of mine bought one after high school.

He was given some money as a high school graduation gift to do with as he pleased. He used it to buy a retired fire truck which he then rented out to the DNR each summer to help fight the chronic wildfires that always break out in eastern WA. He made a killing with that old fire truck and the first thing he bought was a new 3000gt. It was black on black and he had blue lights fitted under the door sills and in the grille which he left on when parked. He was a few years ahead of me in school and it wasn't until later when he became a snowboarding buddy that I leaned the story of the car. By then I was pretty taken with small, sporty lightweight cars but I could still appreciate his for the capable GT that it was.

Certainly not my cup of tea now but a quick Seattle craigslist search is turning up several clean examples under $10k with 40-60k miles on them-maybe a good sc300/sc400 alternative..?

AWD was a deal breaker for me but I always loved the lines. I'm really glad I held out for the 86. It's a keeper.

Did you ever drive his? Did it feel kinda heavy?

Sorry, no.

Everything I've owned has been relatively light. My little Scion is probably tied for heaviest with my old MR2 at around 2700lbs. It really skews your perception. I've driven my buddy's sc400 a few times which feels like a pig despite full exhaust and sticky tires. This is just my opinion-and based on absolutely no science at all-but it doesn't really seem to matter how much power a car has, once it's over that 3000lb threshold it just feels "big". I test-drove two different GenCoupe variants in early 2013 and they just felt weird, with disturbingly light "zero feedback" steering and large echoey interiors.

Another buddy of mine has a mk3 Supra. He's done a pretty comprehensive engine build and claims 350hp, but despite new suspension it just feels like a big GT to me. I still love that generation of Japanese sports cars and touring cars, but I think they're showing their age a bit at this point. It's like trying to go back and play ElderScrolls:Morrowind after finishing Skyrim.

You're describing how I feel about even the vette. I guess I'm really picky about what I love in a vehicle.

I totally agree with you on this, and for most older cars in general. They're clearly older tech and clearly inferior in many ways. Perhaps they have character as Morrowind does, but, well, this is why I don't have an Integra Type R or an NSX. Or an 80s Ferrari. Or a 3000GT or a Supra or an RX-7.

Driven multiple VR-4s. Good power for their day. Least favorite AWD Mitsubishi though. Heavy and Driver is isolated too much IMO.

Inferior? In some ways (safety for example). However I go the opposite way. New cars are not very interesting to me.

With few exceptions I doubt I'll ever own another vehicle whose year starts with a 2. I'd suffer with a gt350 maybe. Or maybe a focus RS. Or a BRZ/frs dedicated track car. Eventually a new tow vehicle. That's about it based on what's out now.

Not interesting, or are they annoying? I find the new tech more annoying than anything.
