Reducing Insurance for hardly used car?
So right now I have another car (my previous car) I gave to my sister. She have it for a year but not licensed yet and the car is driven by me to work only when it snows, so almost not at all lol.
I don't see her getting license anytime soon so the car is just rotting there but is cost $500 for 6 months coverage. In contrast my BRZ is $900 for 6 months and I drive it daily 15,000 miles year to work. Both cars are listed with me as primary driver she isn't on the policy yet since not licensed. I know the most logical thing to do is get rid of it but that isn't an option. |

I don't know of a way to reduce insurance for a 'hardly' used car. The only way is to not use it. A common tactic used by motorcyclist in four season climates is to call their insurance company and cancel the policy every winter and then add it back on in the spring. You can do the same for a car but be sure not to drive it when it's not covered.

My insurance has classification for "Pleasure" vehicles. Adding an old Saab to the policy under this classification recently costs me a grand total of ~15 bucks a month. It may be worth talking to your insurance agent to see if they can do something similar.

Its a old honda (2003), worth maybe 5-8k max (not sure its had a few hard hits lol)
Not sure I want just liability... The pleasure thing, what are the requirements for that? Don't want to get caught in a lie... |

Getting it insured under leisure may have mileage limits, check your insurance. Consider reducing it to Liability or Comprehensive in the winter. One way to figure it's worth it is to find how long before it will payback most of the market value. 3-5 years is a good time frame for payback. In the event it is ever totaled, it will have some scrap value.
