I've had a look on MCA's website but I can't see a corresponding mod for the front.

The equivalent for the front would be a reduction in anti-dive and I can’t think of any good reason people would want to decrease traction under braking.
Of course I don’t quite see the point of decreasing traction under power in the rear either. |

Ummm, the MCA traction mod does the opposite of what you are describing. It reduces rear anti-squat.

It's the other way around - anti- geometry limits weight transfer, hence typically hurts traction on acceleration (anti-squat) and braking (anti-dive) (same as too much anti-roll bars can hurt cornering). MCA reduces anti-squat in the rear and there are a few kits that reduce anti-dive in the front.

Anti-squat forces the tires down and the body up increasing pressure on the contact patch. Reducing anti-squat, especially if it goes negative, lifts the tires into the body, reducing pressure on the contact patch.
It’s like any aspect of suspension geometry, it’s all trade offs, but independent rears don’t typically have much positive anti-squat and these cars aren’t exactly known for making large amounts of torque where positive anti-squat would result in rigid, non-compliant suspension, so I don’t get it. I mean I suppose I get it for rough roads or LS swapped cars… |

Unfortunately our parts bin car has too much anti squat since our rear suspension is basically from the Impreza . That’s what this solves and nobody that has run it has ever said it did not improve traction on their car.

First autox in 5 years.
Changes since last autox: MCA traction mod. Stock powertrain with no tune. 5 year old "new" RC-1s. New Karcepts front bar on 2nd from softest. New-ish Essex BBK with new-ish Winmax W3s. WPC'd Cusco FD. Nearly ALL the Cusco chassis bracing. Runs were a hoot, only had to lift to brake late in the corners. OMG I can brake late. :P Sweepers were a mild lift on turn in and then on throttle early through corner exit with settled rear end and tons of grip. Car did not step out, except when induced. Car would rotate on throttle when desired. Still 10/10, would do MCA traction mod again. https://forums.solo2.com/live_results/

Finally got my set installed after letting it sit on the shelf for 9 months.
I installed STI pillowball trailing arms at the same time. We've used those a lot in the last 10 years...they're a great non-adjustable arm with a high-quality sealed pillowball. Makes a lot of sense to install at the same time here. I thought this combo would be good, and it is good. Not a must have world-changing mod for every car, but I'm impressed and should have tried this a long time ago. The STI trailing arms replace a rubber bushing that squishes and twists on the forward end of the OEM arm for a metal pillowball which does not squish or twist, but does freely and smoothly rotate. So with this combo it feels like a whole heck of a lot of bind has been removed from the rear (because it has...both bushing and geometric). Hard to explain, but it feels much more natural in the way the rear suspension moves. While arguments can be made for some anti-squat having advantages for certain cars, there's simply too much in these cars. There's a clear improvement in ride quality on the terrible roads I drive on. More grip under power as expected too. Still have to put more miles on it, but yeah...good stuff. I've not measured for a change in rear ride height or alignment, sorry. I was planning on doing an alignment and a few other adjustments soon anyway. I would recommend replacing the front and rear trailing arm bolts/nuts with new OEM pieces as well as the big subframe bolts that go up into the car. Just an easy way to save yourself from a bad day. Use a jack to keep the subframe from dropping too far and to hold it in position. Get the big vertical subframe bolts as far in hand tight as you can before cranking them hard. You don't want to cross thread those big boys. Also makes sense to do subframe bushing inserts at the same time too. Not required, but feels good. - Andrew |
