Drift-Office : Vortech / HKS EL / Perrin / Greddy Installed & Tuned!

Previous Vortech Build :

HKS Equal Length Header Results :

So having done a Vortech and a HKS EL setup seperately prior to this, it's always interesting to ponder on the the "what if" question : would the EL header that's proved to be formidable in a NA format be equally good in a FI environment?

Let's go with the basics first :

Vehicle is a BRAND NEW Scion 10 FRS, with about 1000 miles on it. Not that it matters or changes the results but this is probably the FIRST limited edition Scion FRS to go FI since it was released about a month ago...

There was a weird quirk with ECUTek initially when loading the license, but thanks to the boys over in the EU, they got that resolved promptly, at 2AM PST.

^^^ This is new... a professionally built harness, built to spec - as opposed to extending and soldering wires...

So not having any real issues on the first install, especially when lots were complaining about clearances and fitment, I had figured that this one was going to be cake.

I thought wrong.

Anyone notice anything in the pics? It might be hard to see in the first pic but the charge pipes don't line up exactly like they used to in the earlier revision. It would appear that the SC unit is clocked ever so slightly but enough counter clockwise...

In the second pic, the pipe doesn't even line up and there's no way to do so since the mounting bracket is in the way. Why is it so different? Bill had quickly noted that that section of pipe is now CAST and is different from the previous builds (3 piece welded pipe) and there's no way to fit this unless...

So this was what that section of pipe looked like before :

This is what it looks like now :

^^^ What we had to do was to grind down one of the brackets to gain enough clearance to not touch and still be able to line it up... Not sure what happened there but we'll be calling Vortech's Tech Support to see what they can do for the customer here on this one.

And finally, here are some of the other products that were installed...

Overall, everything came together nicely sans that one pipe. And the results? Let's just say that while the HKS EL unit did help right at the very top, I'm not sure if it's worth the extra $1100+ .

The results are really nice and clean, as evident in the accompanying dyno graph! Note that the baseline indicated in this chart is of the same vehicle with the HKS EL header installed but without a tune!

Nice job! Funny, I flipped through the pics on my phone before reading the post and I thought "man, the charge pipe is WAY off"...lol

Now that you have installed both HKS and Vortech can you give us some honest feedback after driving each car? Forget the dyno, tell us what your thoughts are.

Thanks!!

What were you hoping for? 290 on "pump gas"? *chuckles* Yeah, I would have hoped for more with the HKS EL setup but it didn't do merely as much as I had expected sans at the very top end.

You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! (Just kidding! It's been a corny morning already...)

Honestly though, it's not an apples-to-apples comparison as the HKS unit in question has a restrictor plate - but when that Jackson Racing SC unit comes out, that would be a more even match.

Ref : http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=118

Even then, all these SC based setups do exactly what they're supposed to - and they feel more like larger displacement 2.5L engines. Not quite the same as say, a turbo setup, but I digress.

Cheers!

a 100 whp boost basically .... I love it.

oh, and a question. So vortech now sends out a kit with a pre-made wiring harness to replace the DIY job you had to do before? If so, good news!

Yup! The MAF Extension Harness is now included in our kits. No more need for cutting & soldering.
