Drivetrain Options
My end goal for the FA20 is approximately 600hp. I believe upgrading the drivetrain prior to rebuilding the engine is essential. What have you done? I ed a lot only to find myself asking more questions. Should I attempt to part something together or buy what is available?

600hp eh? On the FA20. Well with time and money anything is possible.
You might want too look up the same trannies the V8 swap use.

It is an ambitious long-term dream. I have thought about doing an engine swap. My local tuner shop advised against it; mainly due to potential problems I would discover the hard way over time. In all honesty, I am unsure where to begin. Before dropping cash on upgrades, I am trying to pinpoint the most logical place to start. I thought about buying an OS GIKEN rear diff. Not sure what kind of torque it can handle however. The axles would give out first. ...

I think the main question is, why 600HP on this specific motor? you would probably have more luck on a higher displacement motor like an LS swap. I believe some people have already done a successful LS swap with everything working. someone even swapped over a GTR rearend onto the 86 lol. so anything is really possible, as long as you have the knowledge and funds

Anything over 300whp on pumpgas and you're best off with another engine/trans is what I've come to conclude.
..or better yet, another car!

You can get a Samsonas sequential straight cut gearbox which is good for roughly 740ft/lbs for around $15,000 in the USA. Quaife also has a box that is priced similarly and good for 750BHP. Hollinger has the RD9 which is good for around 700ft/lbs and priced around $25,000.
You can also look at gear swaps. Velox has a 3rd and 4th gear billet swap which hasn't been proven but estimated to be 200-300% stronger. This means roughly 300-450 ft/lbs over stock. There's PAR Engineering that is working with Jacks transmission to do a full straight cut dog box swap around 5-6K+ install. Good luck with your build. |

I never mentioned my ambitious up to 600hp target. He was throwing out more realistic numbers such as 300whp. Weight reduction, upgrading/reinforcing drivetrain weak points, handling improvements... is a start until I decide what to do with the engine.

I would just build the FA20 put a 3076-3576 on the car. Do a Velox gear swap, change out the axles and go for whatever it is your trying to do.

I liked the looks and potential. I had no intentions of keeping my FR-S stock. Swapping in a built LS engine is still on the table. A C6 Corvette was my second choice when I was looking to buy a vehicle. Still might buy one. lol
