Oil Temps
Anyone else monitor oil temps?
I'm a little concerned that mine are running a bit high, and maybe I need an oil cooler. But I'm basing my judgement on many years ago, so I could be (probably) worried about nothing. Modern oils are likely much better than I'm used to. Pre FI, the highest temps I saw were coolant 93°C and oil 120°C Post FI, I see coolant up to 96°C and oil 130°C. It's the oil temp that worries me a bit. 130°C seems quite high, and that's not even pushing it really hard. I'm planning to do some track days soon, and I'm not sure where I stand... Whadderyathinkanall?

If you hitting 130 I would consider oil cooler.
RMS supercharger in Durban I'm maxing at 126 deg, I'm told we good to 130 thereafter oil cooler necessary. Average oil temps at 106 and coolant 86 degrees |

I added a oil cooler to my Tubo setup..just to be on the save side..cost about R 4000.00..small price to pay for a safety.. Will monitor my oil and report back.

Yes have the Spritex RMS Imtercooled kit.
Pushing .7 bar 188wkw 277Nm We have tested at intake temps of 40 degrees, max coolant 103 and max oil 126 and kit holds strong. Dyno testing we ran 3 runs and the highest numbers recorded on run 3, which was good to see the twin screw maintains power. Your Vortech should be good without any requirement to add on. But if you have spare cash oil cooler won't hurt. |

I did a hard and fast high effort run up a local pass today which is very similar to track conditions - and my oil temp looked great.
Never went over 122°C which I think was a lot cooler than my tyres. I've seen it up to 130°C, but that's with uphill high speed runs. It looks like frequent braking, and feathering the throttle through slower corners gives the oil temp a breather. I'm ready to go on track and see what happens and that'll happen later this month. I'll start another thread to see it anyone's interested in getting a few 86's together for some track fun.

HI Fish ,Ryan and Eagle ,, I am using Torque Pro ( Android) but not able to find the Oil temp reading. What software do you use or am I missing a set-up screen or do I need to install the Oil PID ?

Then I just exit Torque, restart the Torque app, and it's fine again. Not a big issue, but still a bit of a PITA...

I'm a big believer in oil coolers.
On my turbo spyder it was burning oil quick. Also the oil went black within 100kms. Added an oil cooler and all sorted. Unfortunately I cant monitor oil temps on that car. I used the works engineering cooler. If i remember correct it was around R2000. Chat to Wesley on the forum he can get them. |
