Hammer, what is the last 4 of your VIN?
Good luck WhiteGoat. Definitely have your car thoroughly tested/scanned/prodded before you buy. That sucks to hear, but I don't think you want to be in our situation. The time my car was running before the light actually came on was about an hour I believe. Hammer and I will keep everyone informed about what happens with our cars...

bonburner-actually the last 6 are the serial number. For the BRZ the first serial number (as listed in the service manual) is 600001 so unless they build 99,999 cars I'd assume that all the BRZ's for this year will start with 60-. All the serial number and ID info can be found in the "2013 Subaru BRZ Factory Service/Shop Manual" thread which is posted in the 'Mechanical Maintenance' section in the forums. It is in the 'ID' section in the first PDF file listed.
Digits / Code / Meaning / Details
1-3 /JF1/ Manufacturer body area/ JF1: passenger car, FHI made
4 /Z/ Car Line/ Z:BRZ
5 /C/ Body Type/ C:Coupe
6 /A/ Displacement/ A:2.0 Non-Turbo
7 /B/ Grade/ B:R C:S (Premium/Limited?) not defined in manual
8 /1/ Restraint/ 1:Manual belts, dual airbag, side airbag for seatback, curtain airbag for roof
9 /X/ Check Digit/ 0-9 & X
10 /D/ Model Year/ D:2013MY
11 /1/ Transmission Type/ 1:FR 6 speed MT 2:FR 6 speed AT
12-17 /600001/ Serial Number 600001-

Anyone know what Toyota 86 or Scion FR-S serial numbers begin with (60?) or is the 4th digit the only difference?

[ame="http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RNkLs9q4ibg"]YouTube - 2013 FRS IDLE ISSUE[/ame]

This is my car, I finally caught it happening. Excuse me for my lack video etiquette, it's not a bad one just sloppy. But it does the job.

How many here would like to see a list of FR-S/BRZ owners who have experienced the CEL/SL/idle issue? I'd like to try to document the number of owners, their mileage, location, and status of their cars. I was planning on doing this privately in Excel, but would rather keep a running list in a separate thread. I feel it would be a good snapshot to help understand the severity and broad reach of this problem.

As a hopefully soon to be buyer of this car, I would LOVE to see the stats. I'd also like to see the ratio of MT to AT that this happens in.

Would be interesting to have a definitive range of VINs experiencing this issue, as well as other issues, separated by issue.

Mine is 701177, 5k miles and had the idle dip twice over that distance, but hasn't been a violent shaking idle dip like some of these have.

Good idea. That info plus VIN and manufacture date.

az, this was a serviceable video and included all the salient info.

As I watched the entire thing, I never saw your RPMs go below 500. With, and even without, the a/c on, this doesn't seem like a crisis to me. However, maybe it is different if you are sitting in the car when it happens. You didn't say anything about shudder, shake or stalling, so I don't know what the problem is. The guys with stalling, engines dying and cel codes — they got problems.

Please, tell me what I am not seeing.

Just an FYI for anyone talking about a so called "range" of VIN's, VIN's are not sequential and do not indicate the order of being built.

Can you support this statement with evidence?

TSBs use VINs to establish which cars need the required service.

I think what has people concerned is that this idle dip may lead to worse things. Mine ('13 FRS MT) does the same thing as the OP's. Idles around 800, occasionally drops to 400-500 (usually with a very slight shudder) and pops back up to 800. That doesn't bother me. What will bother me is if it gets any worse...it won't be a crisis until it starts stalling or throwing a CEL...
