N/A typical oil temps
I've read the threads on oil temp and watched @Dezoris oil pressure video. He mentions 0w-20 being fine for street and autox on an N/A car, but the limits being around 225-235 F.
My car is pretty much stock minus an OFT tune, running TGMO 0w-20. The other night it was about 70 F out, and I did a few runs to redline 1st-3rd gear, datalogging with OFT. I saw oil temps as high as 235, and during autox before my tune I've seen as high as 244 oil temp on 85-95 F days at autox. Just cruising on the freeway I see up to 219 regularly. I understand an oil cooler isn't really necessary for street/autox, but are these temps consistent with what you guys are experiencing? |

with ambient temp being around 70-80 here i see my average oil temp DD my car at 195-215. done 2 track events with ambient temps being 55-70 the average was 220 all the way up for 250 but no more then that. not sure if this is a problem or no but this was my experience.

Yes.
125-135C without Cusco oil cooler. 110-120C with Cusco oil cooler. Both are peak temps at track events, ranging from 50-100F ambient. UOA shows normal "wear" on the oil, nothing different than normal driving.. -alex |

Koyo rad, vented hood and JR NA oil cooler. My oil temps rather low with 5w30 in winter, it barely gets to 100C during my 15 minute commute. It will stay around 85C at night when I go out for food or groceries. Going back to 0w20 on the next oil change..
As for track temps, here's two data points with Motul 300V 0w20: BRP 13CW / No Oil Cooler / Ambient 76F Hi / => Oil Temp 270F Hi BRP 13CW / JR NA Oil Cooler / Ambient 97F Hi / => Oil Temp 228F Hi I've seen guys with no cooling mods log oil temps of up to 280F at the track. |

My car is modded and has a catted UEL on, so YMMV
Without oil cooler I was getting temps up to 130ish C at the track, after installing the maximal performance oil cooler my oil temp never got past 115C at the track where my car never fell below 5K RPM's during the 20 min sessions. Street driving my oil temp was often passing 100C with Toyota 0w-20. after the oil cooler oil temp stays a cool 86C during street driving. My average ambient temps are usually mid 80's to mid 90's F year round. |

If you have an air cooler it's possible you'll get a pressure drop as dezoris has mentioned elsewhere i think. So you trade some pressure for temp.

What kind of pressure drop are you talking about?
Elemen Tuning uses an oil cooler along with other mods to keep the temps down, which helps keep his oil pressures UP. I just bought an oil cooler that I want to mount in the passenger side driving light area (removing the light) which is about as far away from the oil filter and sandwich plate as you can get. I'm wondering what kind of pressure losses I can expect. |

That's the conclusion I came to as well.
I see oil coolers on street applications where the temps are actually too low (in the 170-180 range). Oil needs to be 200-220 to be effective. It is what the weights are rated at. Too cool=too thick, too hot =too thin. IMO the goal is to have oil temps at 200-220. A little hotter occasionally is just fine. Constant driving with oil temps too cool is worse than the oil getting a bit hot every once i a while IMO. Conclusion is most cars can do fine without an oil cooler, but if you drive hard, or track, and cause oil temps to go high fairly often, then an oil cooler can help. I plan to instal my oi cooler, and for street driving I'll cover the cooler to keep the temps up above 200, and uncover when tracking or hard driving, and time temps go over 230-240. |

Sounds like this simple mod is perfect for a DD that gets fun occasionally but doesn't do any serious racing. Far lower peaks, only slightly lower when not pushing it.
