comparing the intercontinental twins
Hi peoples,
I've been reading posts about about various issues with frs like cricket sounds, rattling doors, bespoke diplay units etc.. I'm on the waiting list and soon to be owner of a 86 gts and I'm curious to know if the problems are universal? also, I was told Toyota schedule builds according to order configurations, is there a way to find out which ones are either scheduled or in production? cheers. Good question about the pump. There are not a lot of Brits that I have seen posting here, it's mostly US, Canadian and Australian. NA cars have the pump noise for sure. I think most suspect it's a fuel issue. Ethanol seems to make it chirp, and e-free keeps it quiet, at lest in my personal experience. Off to read around the British FT86 forum.

They're all built in the same place, so the problems will be universal, yes.
However, as I believe the FR-S head units are unique to the FR-S, you'll have your own set of issues there.

I believe the build date has a lot to do with potential problems. The earliest builds probably had the biggest series of problems. As problems became known, and a diagnosis was able to be made, corrective measures would have been made in the production. My car was built in August '12 and the only glitch I have had in almost 12,000 miles was the rattle from the package shelf area and that has been corrected. My FR-S remains trouble free.

Crickets seem to be a North American problem, extremely few international cricket reports (or none, I haven't seen any). Nobody knows why and ethanol isn't proven:

Bespoke is only offered through Scion I believe. Rattles are a problem affecting all budget sports cars, cheap interiors with plastic bits that don't line up (at least not permanently), you'd likely get the same thing if you bought anything else in the price range (Hyundai, Ford, Vauxhall, Nissan, etc.). Subaru's have a reputation for being a little rougher around the edges compared to other brands. All the issues mentioned so far will only be issues if you're sensitive to them. |

That's likely more the fault of the US-specific blend of gasoline than any fault of the car, honestly.
