Anyone driven a 15 GTI 6MT yet?
Girlfriend and I test drove a 2015 VW GTI SE 2DR 6MT this evening. Since learning manual on my FR-S I've now driven a 13 WRX STI, 14 Civic Si, 15 Fiesta ST and 14 Focus ST.
The GTI had the strangest transmission of the bunch. First off, the pedals, are very low to the floor, and there's not much room above them. I wear a size 12 or 13 depending on the brand, and the pedals hit me mid-foot (in the FR-S I can put my foot wherever I want in relation to the clutch pedal, as there's tons of room). I kept inadvertently contacting the top of the footwell with the toe of my boot. It was very odd positioning. Also, the engagement zone was very short. And while the shifter was smooth it was also vague and the throws were long. The car was otherwise fun (very easy power but very traction limited on the stock tires) but the shifting experience left me cold.

Gf has had her 15' 6mt gti for near 2 months now. If it turns out to be reliable it will be a hell of a car. Power is similar to a stage 1 flashed mkv gti, mpg isn't much if at all worse than her mk6 tdi after factoring gas price differences. Minus the fwd bit the total package makes the frs/brz look like a horrible value.
I'm an overgrown ape (6 3" ish, 250, sz 13), the pedals are fine, very similar to my mothers 08' 6mt gti. I've always found vw manuals to be buttery and smooth if a bit numb, this one is no exception. Very nice gf mobile. I was trying to get her into a fiesta st. But the vw dealers were a bit more accomodating on her trade (tdi golf, dsg, out of warranty time bomb). Her criteria pretty much ruled out 99% of the market. Hatch, manual, peppy, sunroof, 4 door, mpg, leather, etc. |
