On the new 2.4 engine, the pick up uses a 5 sided screenbox to ensure proper oil flow in case of a partial blockedge. You can see it in the pictures floating around...it's a box with sealant at the top, but the other 4 sides of passages are open and clean. Unlike the previous version pickup that had a circular screen at the bottom that could be completely clogged. The little bit of blockage shown, while not ideal, would not grenade an engine and would maintain proper oil pressure. I'd bet there is something else "starving" the oil on the cars that have failed. Maybe oil not returning to the pan in high g loads, (ie; drifting, hard corners), maybe low factory oil fills, maybe faulty PVC systems, maybe faulty new oil pumps.......

Even then you can still fuel/oil starve any FA20 FRZ86 unless you put some mods in, or break an axle. And I suspect those particular issues will persist in the 2nd gen because fixing those issues would add hundreds if not thousands to the sticker and 99% of these cars will be driven no harder then grandma's Prius while under warranty. If you want to drive a sports car at 10/10ths and not have the manufacturer deny warranty claims I'd get a Porsche, Mazda, or BMW/Mini over anything else, and even then they still might tell you to go pound sand. (I know a guy who put 4 transmissions in his ND Miata, Mazda warrantied the first 2 or 3 iirc) If I had a new car I'd be pulling the oil pan this weekend, cleaning out the tube and applying new sealant. I'd repeat at the next oil change and cross my fingers that's that and no more would break off the timing chain cover. This is one of the easiest to prevent issues this chassis has had and it's a one time fix. *as my fucking 2nd TOB starts making noise at 115k miles* |

They put so much great effort into marketing the GR86 it would be a shame if another department(s) blow it up. If you're busy and don't want to waste too much time, call them on the way to work.

I haven't had time to pull my own oil pan yet but something that's stood out to me as I see everyone's pictures - there appears to be very little surface area on the engine side of the mating surface. I've never worked on a Subaru engine but for other engines I've pulled pans on there would usually be about 3/4" of mating surface but some of these pictures look like they're only 1/2", if not less. I could be wrong though since it can be hard to tell scale in pictures without a banana. That narrow surface would make it super easy to over-apply.

I disassembled my filter today and there was nothing notable in there. 2 tiny metal shavings, a few tiny black particles, and a small piece of light green somethingorother.
