There are things that made Dark Souls 1 great. It was a hard game, but it wasn't unfair - you could use your skill and knowledge of the game to turn almost every encounter into a fair fight.

But Dark Souls 2 just ramped up the level of unfair hardness, as if that was supposed to be the defining characteristic of the game. Stuff like bosses having huge hitboxes for their attacks, enemies that tracked you while swinging, overlapping attacks from multiple enemies. It left a lot of fights up to chance, and not skill. It was made that way just to frustrate the player.

Also DS1 had a coherent story. DS2 is pretty much just that witch laughing at you in the first cinematic: You'll lose your souls HAHAHAheheh *cough*

The two games weren't made by the same guy. It's apparent that the devs took a different direction for DS2. None of the levels flow together like they did in DS1, you just warp around. It's not immersive.

Yeah. A $700 game system would be pricey today much less in 1994. We had one, not sure how my brother got it. There were some seriously awesome games on it. Gex was actually a pretty great platformer, tbh.

Eh, I guess I had a different experience with it.
I can only recall a couple spots where I actually said "bull shit" out loud because of something that was cheap (like those 3 assholes you have to fight together).
Combat and fluidity was much improved over DS1 in my opinion.

I didn't miss out on the story I suppose since I watched YouTube videos by EpicNameBro where he pretty much explains everything as he played through.

Gex was also multiplatform, what really killed them is full motion video games... god those were awful

It's being directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, who directed Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1, and Bloodborne. Dark Souls 2 was the only one that wasn't his game. It's going to be good.
