Question Better tires and wheels = less fun?

I'm just wondering if buying bigger and stickier tires will make the car less fun?

Switching from the stock tires to the much grippier Dunlop Star Specs made my BRZ more fun IMHO, not less.

Fun for me would mean it makes it's easier to kick out the rear at lower speeds.

Depends on what you have fun doing. Sometimes I have fun cornering hard without losing grip.

More grip. Being able to take corners faster without losing traction.

If losing grip was fun for me I'd swap the stock all-season tires back on my Mustang GT and drive it all the time.

Toyota refers to that as "boring".

Find some Kumho MX's or RT-615's that will fit your wheels. Bubblegum sticky and cheap.

Yes and yes. Small increase in NVH with the Star Specs and a small drop in mpg, not enough data to quantify how much of a drop yet, as the first tank with the stickier tires was also the first full tank past 1000 miles where I took it over 4k rpm. In the past I've seen my mpg drop by 2-3 mpg on other cars when switching to stickier tires.

I guess Toyota and I have different definitions of fun. I've had Kumho MX's and Falken 615's in the past, but the Yokohama AD08's I've got on my Mustang now are plenty sticky, although I can still break them loose if I want to.

Those are good too!

There's no compund so sticky that you can't break traction if you want to.

What's nice is to do it when you want to, and not because the tires belong on a Prius...

Toyota, are you listening?

Exactly. I don't expect tons of grip from the stock tires on any car, but the original tires on my BRZ would allow the rear end to step out with normal driving (if I had the traction/stability control off) or cause the stability control to kick in when I wasn't even pushing the car very hard. Even the original Pirelli P-Zero Nero all-seasons on my Mustang had more grip than the Prius tires on my BRZ.
