A list of tiny death boxes and cars that people drive aggressively top the list. Surprised the Mustang didn't top the list. Diving into the statistics, you find that bigger cars are generally safer than smaller cars, tippy cars are less safe, and family cars are usually safer.

ok, you need to explain your site to me. so my understanding is that vinwiki is a respository for the history of any specific vehicle.
in this case, i wanted to know more about the situation that led to the damaged car. so i click on the link in your sig, and am directed to a landing page for the specific car, but it's just a bunch of pictures with random photos, notes about updates, and comments on those photo's. is my understanding wrong, and vinwiki is really just a car-centric instagram site?

It's not all that different from driving a motorcycle. Remain vigilant, don't linger next to a larger vehicle(little cars LOVE the blind spots on my gmc savana whenever i need to merge), and move a little faster than most traffic as a moving spot in a mirror is easier to see than a (relatively) stationary spot.

When I added the BRZ to my insurance policy, the agent commented on how relatively low my rate was. She did say that many factors are considered. Of course the car itself, but the mitigating circumstance is demographics and location. I am 68 years old, so my liability is lower than a driver 18 to 25. The car itself is more or less a fixed cost. A friend who is in the same demographic had a Lexus IS250C, the one with the hardtop convertible. His insurance was insane. The reason is that the Transformers-like retracting top is so easy to damage and so difficult to repair... damn near impossible to get right. He ditched that car because is was a lame ride. I did ask the agent what my rate would be for a car like the Toyota Supra (based on what I knew at the time) and also a Corvette. That was an eye-opener. She did say that they have the Corvette is on top of the list of fatalities in a single car accident. About the stats on the 86/BRZ; suppose you have a statistic of 1 in 10,000. For reasons not taken into account, there are two additional incidents in the measurement period. The press would then have a headline reading "Fatalities in BRZ TRIPLED!"

i knew a guy that refused to ever even drive a 'vette because everyone he knew that rode in one was involved in some sort of wreck(he listed a few dozen different times), most of them single-vehicle wrecks where the driver got a little too confident in their abilities.

The conclusions they stated don't actually follow logically from their data. This list is therefore 100% meaningless. Their conclusion is in bold:
“Despite recent advances in safety technology, our data suggests that small vehicles still aren’t as safe as larger vehicles when they are involved in serious accidents. Subcompact cars have a fatal accident rate of 4.5 cars per billion vehicle miles, which is almost double the overall average,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. “Sports cars are the vehicle segment with the highest fatal accident rate of 4.6 cars per billion vehicle miles. They’re designed to prioritize speed and acceleration, so it is perhaps no surprise that their accidents result in a high number of fatalities.”There's a hole their logic big enough to drive a BRZ through: They calculated your likelihood of being in a fatal accident per billion miles. They did NOT calculate the rate of accidents per billion miles. They did NOT calculate the rate of serious accidents per billion miles. They did NOT calculate your likelihood of dying if you're in one of those serious accidents. Therefore they did NOT calculate anything having to do with the actual safety of the car, and they can't logically draw the conclusion they stated from their numbers. As for why the distinction is important, the BRZ had 6.9 fatalities per billion miles driven in their study. But what if the BRZ is statistically involved in more accidents than an average car or more accidents than the other cars on the list? Hypothetically let's suppose every car on that list except the BRZ has 100 accidents per billion miles. That would imply you have a 10.2% chance of being killed if you get into an accident in a Mirage, a 9.8% chance in a Corvette, etc. But suppose that the BRZ has 1000 accidents per billion miles. That would mean your chance of dying in a BRZ accident would be 0.69%, far less than the others. Thus, to adequately evaluate the engineering safety of the vehicles and draw the conclusion they stated, you have to consider the deaths per accident. They ignored it altogether. Conclusion: Bullshit. |
