Does clear tinting a windshield cut heat?
A clear tint is legal here in Florida. The shop tells me it will get me a 50% heat reduction and will not affect vision either day or night. That would be a big help in this climate. Has anyone tried it?

Depends on how much UVA and UVB it actually blocks.

You'll want to get a tint that blocks IR more so than UV to keep heat out...

Looks like Llumar AIR 80 BL SR HPR (whew) would be the one you want for max heat rejection, or AIR 90 CL SR HPR for max light transmission with significant heat rejection. Last edited by ZDan; 04-13-2023 at 07:19 AM. |

(*) 3M quotes performance data of their films as installed on 73% tinted glass. Back-calculating the VLT of Crystalline 90, it only reduces VLT on the order of 1%. I don't know whether the Llumar AIR 90 VLT numbers are of the film itself, or include glass. If just the film itself, accounting for glass might reduce VLT below what's legal, but it's probably close enough to not get into trouble. |

With the proper film you can eliminate most of the solar gain. It can make a big difference.

It is always going to get hot in a car. The part I noticed was once you start it the car cools down in about 1/2 the time. Usually I was a mile or so down the toll road from work when it started to feel cool. After the car felt cool before I got on the toll road less than a mile from work.
