Does anyone use soft crates in their twin? Took Bruno to the lake after work and he was anxious until he laid across my arms. Sternum pinning my arm between him and center console, still able to shift with wrist articulation. Neck drooped over steering arm. Comatose. If not this, pacing the cabin. Less safe.

Yes, we used soft crates with all of our 3 pups until they learned to stay in the rear. The soft crate calms them and makes it feel den like. We do not use any restraints, dividers now. Probably should but we don't.

Having animals in the front is a no go for me. Too much of a distraction.

Sooo nothing has really worked for Haru, except my latest experiment.

I use:

1. Seatbelt tether (it buckles in and clips to his collar/harness)
2. A similar divider to this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XKH4C9F

The problem with our car and most of these dividers/hammock things is that they're made with the expectation that every car has anchor points behind and at the bottom of the front seats. As far as I've been able to tell, the twins do not have those anchors.

This means the bottom of the mesh divider hangs loosely. For Haru at least, he's an escape artist, so that wasn't quite enough to contain him.

What I ended up doing was grabbing two spare 5lb weights. I tied the bottom anchor straps of the divider to them. I then basically wedged them between the back bench and the back of each front seat.

For the most part that worked well enough. But, like I said before, Haru is an escape artist. The sides are still fairly loose (either that or I haven't figured out the right adjustment to make them taut and flush to the sides of the seats). So Haru would still squeeze through.

So then I draped a blanket over it that fills all the extra space. Now Haru has been behaving MUCH better. He's gotten calmer on short drives now, but it's still a work in progress.

Yep I use a soft carrier that is raised up off the front passenger seat for my girl.

She is clipped into it with her harness, and is quite content to be up higher and able to look out as we drive around. Though she typically falls asleep even during short car rides.

Especially tough just having the one car. I think my situation could've been a bit easier if I had a more practical (lol I always thought this was already a very practical car) second car, like a four-door sedan. Even just a Corolla or some other basic car.

Without this kind of setup, Haru was able to reach the front and keep me from shifting or once or twice hit my arm while I was holding the wheel going 70-ish on the freeway .

We've had two different Newfies since I had my 86. Both have travelled in my car, and MomHawk's Mustang for short rides (like to the Vet or boarding). Usually we haul them around in the Suburban though, where they typically go to the back seat and curl up. If they want to look out the window they sit in one of the middle seats and we roll down the window.

I posted this on page 4, but this is Bella, the larger of the two, checking out my car.

I definitely agree having animals in the front isn’t safe, and having him lay across me is an exacerbated safety concern. Him being calm and predictable in that state is at least more safe than his oafish 50 lb frame pressing into while we’re moving faster than 20mph.

The center ridge is def an issue. My girl can sorta get comfortable in there. She’s 100% more calm though. I think the seats can lay almost flat right? Soft create atop folded down seats?
