@ matador: I just said I didn't care anymore, did I not?

@Andrew: Actually some might mistake the ST for the chassis designation of all the Celica's that ran the S-series engine. The ST I'm talking about is the trim model from the 6th generation "you mostly see secretaries driving these" celicas (to me, the generation that completely killed the Celica's true sports heritage.) It came with the relatively unexciting 7A-FE engine and was basically bare-bones.

so it bares no refrence to this? (I just read the History Lesson provided in this topic)
"
Toyota began selling the first generation Celica ST, based on the EX-1 "Car of the Future"concept vehicle, in the summer of 1971"

For my reference yes, but thats actually the beauty of the name I gave. It pokes fun AND pays homage at the same time.

I think some people have me mistaken. I have nothing against celicas. I absolutely adore the RA65 series (and would have one if I had money, without a doubt). But I'm an AE86 nut. Toyota says "here's a new car inspired by the AE86!" and then they give it a name that pays absolutely no homage to the 86 at all?

You gotta think of it from out of that perspective. Imagine, if you would, if Ford actually DID make the Probe the new mustang? Mustang enthusiasts would've been PISSSEEDD.

I can appreciate the feelings.
I wish I could share them, but unfortunately just knowing of the cars exsistance isn't enough. It helps with members like you and Matador, and the many other members, who know the cars, their history and significance to this new build.

I wish I were more familiar with the many model numbers, chassis / engine codes to be able to piece things together, I will admit google has been MOST helpful but I still get lost easily. I am learning to swim, so to speak, in these waters, and Im pleased to say Im learning quickly.

My knowledge previously was restricted to the recently designed 2ZZ-GE Toyota built for the 7th? gen Celica GT-S and first gen Matrix's XRS (Matrices? can you pluralize a name in refrence to an object?) So this is most interesting to me.

Though Im still unaware of the ST in the newer gen Celica's. Im guessing its what they called the base trim for the 2000-2005 Celica's? As in, ST > GT > GT-S?

No, the last generation of celica's never had an ST model (at least in the states). The ST's I'm talking about are from the 6th generation Celicas (93-99), which coincidentally, is also their chassis designation.

Except that the Probe and the Mustang are much less similar than the AE86 and any variant of the Celica made over the last 25 years...

And -- no offense -- the number of Celica enthusiasts is probably closer to the number of Mustang enthusaists than either is to the number of AE86/Levin/Trueno/Sprinter enthusiasts.

Also: Only one name to choose from...

relatively speaking? I agree. But in absolute numbers celica enthusiasts are still just a drop of water in a sea of mustang enthusiasts.

World wide? I don't know about that... there's probably more Celicas floating around Europe and all of Asia than Mustangs.

Now he's just arguing for the sake of arguing. My anaolgy wasn't used to be the basis of a 500 page research topic. No, actually it was quite a bit more simple than that, used to illustrate a very basic point.

i have a baaaad baaaad feeling it might just be called the Celica... ive been seeing celicas, old and newer, all around town.. and not just one here and one there.. no, i was stopped at an intersection and an orange celica came from east to west and at the same time a black one came from west to east...

Super late in this but just wanted to chime in and say Celica for 3 reasons:

1.) Celica > Corolla - The AE86 was never called Corolla in Japan...where this car will be launched. In the grand scheme of things and considering how many international models such of this are heading towards universal naming, Celica just makes sense. It is "inspired by the AE86" and we all love that....but the Celica name is far more inspiring than Corolla and was used in Japan as well. It would also rally both Celica fans and AE86 fans into one huge group. (This is a good thing)

2.) Subaru AWD version? Why not an AWD Toyota version? Drift? Rally? Anyone remember the Celica GT-FOUR? (Alltrac in the U.S.) Yeah, I know there was a WRC Corolla but it didn't last nearly as long as the Celica did.

3.) Once again, inspired by the AE86 but look at it...just look at it! It looks like a Celica! not a Corolla, Levin, Trueno, Sprinter etc. etc.
