It's mid-90s territory, roughly.

4K in 6th on the 4.3 is 88.48. On the 4.1 it's 92.8.

Even 88 is asking for it.

I was looking at it this morning, it would at least be 140ish km/h.... at LEAST.... I found myself coasting at an easy 3.3k RPM in 6th and noticed I was already going a little quick for what's really needed.

Mostly you two should agree to disagree, there is one point I can't agree with you though and that is on the point of actually shifting not being "fun", or so you seem to imply.

Downshifting and upshifting in an MT is part of the involvement or driving experience if you may, but the way you talk, it sounds like you drive an AT or almost would prefer an AT with paddles, which there is nothing wrong with that, but sitting at 4k for power, isn't really where you want to be first off, you'd want to be higher than that, and secondly there is a lot of satisfaction (at least for myself) when blipping from like 3k to 5k RPM's and doing those hard shifts.

Too much has been lost in translation here. It's like broken telephone
Shifting is definitely fun, just not in typical NYC highway traffic. I'd be constantly jumping between 3rd and 4th if I tried to keep cruising RPMs low. Its a pain in the ass.

And jesus, yes exactly 4k rpm is right in the torque dip, but I'm not holding my car exactly at 4k.

When I actually get farther away from the city, even just to Long Island, I cruise in 4th or 5th and downshift when I need it. But this isnt the case most of the time in NYC. The only times the highways are really clear are early mornings (<6AM) and late nights (>12AM).

My point is most of the time I'm driving over 4k rpm anyway, so to answer the OP's question, I don't think its a big deal.

EDIT:
Down shifting stick handling engine noise knowledge **** swinging aside...

At green lights, I get left so far behind by normal econoboxes with their CVTs. To keep up I have to shift fast and rev and make all kinds of racket, meanwhile they just whoosh away. Anyway I'm ranting, back to my original question... so is it safe?
Is it harsh to be above 4k RPM? No. Is it safe for prolonged periods? Yes. Should speed be limited? Adjust for traffic and drive at whatever is safe in that sense.

And if you're in NYC, fuel economy is not really anywhere near the forefront of your mind. Knowing how that traffic is at virtually any time of day, I can understand your habits having a manual in that city.

I used to make this run down SH 130 to Seguine frequently when I lived in Texas, routinely cruising along at 90 MPH at 4000 RPM.

The only thing you had to worry about on SH 130 was hogs. No, not cops. I mean feral hogs. You didn't want to hit one of those bastards at 90.

Cops never bothered out there. What was the point? Setting your cruise on 90 was still within the 10% error the FMVSS allows for your uncertified speedometer. They couldn't make enough money out there to justify putting a trooper on patrol.

Oh, also, that pic shows "heavy traffic" for SH 130. And it's smooth as silk. There's no reason not to go 90.

While the geography of North America favors roads like this, about 80% of the USA resides in urban areas, not rural. You prove the point that this is rare by noting how this particular freeway has no traffic, ever.

Ahhh.......yes, ........ I remember cruising through Nevada, back in the 60s as fast as the car would go, without overheating ........ when the speed limit was "safe and sane" .......

All those urban areas are connected by... rural roads!

SH 130 is not really considered a rural road by the people who use it. That's the "bypass" many people use to make the 1:30 drive between the urban areas of Austin and San Antonio when they want to avoid the I-35 nightmare.

I had the same question for my 2017 too. So is it bad or not to cruise at 4k?

So how often do you do that drive?

I'd wager not often

My point stands, this is a minority of car use cases.
