My buying experience from Long Beach for my BRZ was very simple.
I had already owned a 2004 Scion xB Release Series 1.0 (hot lava) so I naturally went to Scion first where I bought it. Giant, newly remodeled, probably #1 dealership in the West, and I walked around the floor for 15 minutes and no one approached me. I had warned my girl about this before we arrived, because this had been my experience before when just looking at cars with a friend at various dealers. Anyways, after finally being helped, the Pure Price was what killed it for me and the FRS right then and there. So I went to the Subaru dealership and test drove one. The salesman said that someone told him that the FRS felt faster than the BRZ. I then wished I had test drove an FRS earlier just so I could have something to base an experience with both cars. They didn't have WRB in stock and there wasn't going to be any for three months. So I placed the refundable deposit down and went back to Scion. I test drove an FRS and thought, "wow, is it a little faster? this car has 70 miles on it (BRZ had 7), could that make a difference?" I told myself I'm crazy for thinking that, just because someone mentioned it. It would have been interesting to have felt the Scion was faster and then after drive the BRZ and hear him confirm it. I told the Scion guy that I liked the car, that I am partial to Scion, and I want the Release Series 10.0. These had already been around for a while. And they had probably 10 still in stock. He just wouldn't budge with the Pure Price. I even showed him the "offer" from Subaru showing a MY newer car with all the same features plus alcantara and navigation and also $2k less. I told him I'd be a fool for paying that much more cash just for an emblem that glows. I looked around for other cars before deciding on this platform. I didn't like other cars that were in the same price range, as I have always liked unique cars (before the weird new xB had been purchased, I had driven the cleanest 1985 Cadillac Eldorado around) and I really do not see another car that fits similar criteria within the same price range. I considered small luxury cars, as I could afford the difference in monthly payment, but really couldn't justify making a $40k+ buy when <$30k will get you something obviously cheaper to own but also possibly even "more fun to drive." Anyways, I used my three month delivery time as a "cool off period," as I went back and forth with myself on whether or not I should jump the gun. Eventually the time passed, and I took delivery of the car after having a pleasant experience at Subaru. Since owning the car for 5k miles, I can say I am completely happy with the purchase. I enjoy reading about the car and hearing about its ups and downs, as I can totally relate to that now. When I test drove the car, I had just stepped out of my xB so it felt quite low and zippy, especially as I had been used to keeping my xB under 3k rpm(its not fast, why try and drive it fast, right?). Can my mom's 2005 Nissan Quest 3.5 smoke it? Sure feels like that to me, but I am never playing around that redline much, as I had been used to keeping that low. My point being that a car can feel underpowered when compared to another, but how many of these people are like me and barely scratching the surface? I'd imagine a lot, because torque goes a long way. |
