I would be interested in your thoughts.

If you look closer the only difference is the leather on the door panels, and the seats, (some 86 have the leather\alcantara seats), and dual zone climate controls with the push button start.

The dash is the same materials.

Remember toyota said they build the 86 by design with passion not by committee. Not sure if Scion is following that...100 percent.

Depends on the price i guess.

Dealers are generally clueless. If Toyota hasn't announced it to the public, they don't know either. They'll just regurgitate what we already know: "Spring 2012" and "affordable"

It is still really early for a lot of this.

Dealers have no idea yet what pricing will be.

In all honesty Subaru and especially Scion don't know what pricing will be.

I'm sure Scion is looking between 21 - 25k and figuring what people need and want at those price points. I highly doubt we will see a departure from mono spec offerings from them. Additionally Push button start / HID's / Dual zone HVAC etc will either not be dealer installed accessories (i.e. Scions version of an option) or if they offered I promise the price will be very hard to swallow.

When the tC first went on sale it had a MSRP around 16.5k if you look at the cars that were sent out for review which had been equipped with many dealer installed accessories many were listed as 19k - 20k "as tested" in the reviews. Most of what Scions "options" entail are typical aftermarket modifications that both cost more and have a warranty.

My prediction, which is based of what we have heard so far. (all +/- $750 ish)

Scion FR-S @ 22.5k (Cloth interior, basic head unit, no HID's and the cheaper looking HVAC controls)

BRZ Premium @ 25K (push button start, Nav, Dual Zone Climate)
BRZ LTD @27K ( Premium seats, Fogs, Heated seats)

Both Subaru and Toyota know that price is a huge issue with this car, they are already making a car that doesn't match the direction the american market has been moving. they are walking a razors edge between not making this car attractive enough to people wanting something better than an SI/tC/Ford Focus and pricing it out of what makes sense for a small "fun" but non-practical car.

I don't know anything about Subaru or Scion, but $23-25k seems like a good price for such a car. By that I mean that we would be fortunate to get the car at that price range.

But maybe I am unaware of what else could be had for less . . . ?

Despite the cars being pretty different, I would look at the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0 as the most similar modern offering.

Currently the Genesis Coupe ranges from 22.5k - 26.750K. I would be surprised to see a final price more than 1K outside this range.

anything south of 21k is unlikely as it is too close to the TC and simply too low for what this car is. Anything north of 28K is unlikely since this car, even very well equipped as it is, simply will never be competitive with other offerings at or above that price point.

I agree with your assessment, but would like to add that IMO the basic(all the 2.0's) Genesis Coupe is overpriced for what you get...compared to a Civic Si for example. Hyundai missed the target on pricing I think. I also wouldn't spend $30k for their top model, ever. You can get more car against the lower models, and more car vs the higher model. Strike 2.

I think the Genesis 2.0 is probably offered at a very fair price for what you get. The civic SI is a tuner version of everyone's favorite commuter car. It's styling is about as boring as you can possibly get and it handles well for a FWD car, but that is it. The genesis gets you a turbocharged engine, a dedicated RWD sports car platform, a apples to apples interior, and is better equipped than the Honda.

With that said, I still think that toyota/scion/subaru will need to stick close to the genesis price point on an MSRP basis, but I also think that the Hyundai sells in more volume than is planned for this car and thus the actual sale prices may be closer to MSRP than what a genesis can be had for.

Your pricing is flawed... Premium seats, fogs, and heating seats is not $2k difference in price between the Limited and Premium models of the BRZ
The BRZ limited will have the NAV, push start, and dual Climate zone along with the heated seats and fogs and rear spoiler and leather\alcantara seats.

The BRZ premium will have the basic radio and HIDS. This makes it as most $1000 more than the FR-S.

Nobody officially said nav was included on both models of the BRZ. There are pics of a BRZ without the Nav.

So (+-$750)

FR-S (CD radio)
$23k

BRZ Premium (HIDS, CD radio)
$24k

BRZ Limited (Nav, Dual HVAC with push start, Leather\Alcantara Heated seats, fogs, rear spoiler.)
$26k

The BRZ limited will still be about the price of a basic WRX. So it works. If they do this they will sell every one that they make.

But I still think Scion needs to modify their monospec ways and allow options in the FR-S. People do want the HIDS, dualzone AC with push start and the upgraded seats.

If $20,995 I will seriously consider it.

If $21,995 I will also consider the BRZ.

If $22,995 I will err towards the BRZ.

Uh, yes they did. The BRZ pics w/o navigation is a Japanese base model. They are only bringing the Premium and Limited to the States.

Scion should be $21k or they're dead on arrival. I'm still leaning heavily towards a BRZ.

If the Scion shows up at 21k USD I'll be walking into the dealer day 1. Anyone want to buy a "gently used" '05 Accent?

FWIW

The January 2012 issue of Car magazine is showing "est. £25,000" for the GT-86.

I have no idea how that figure might relate to USDM pricing.

LOL -Reminds me of how I "gently used" a rental Accent up north 2 years ago on an empty lot like that. The thing plowed so much it was positively agricultural until you yanked the handbrake, but it was still fun to beat up on.

Wish this pricing differential would be seen up here - but given the grotesque premiums always imposed by Subaru Canada, the CAD numbers (working from your figures) are likely to be:

FR-S $25k
BRZ Limited $31-32k
BRZ Premium $33-34k
