I think self-driving cars are going to be awesome... for people not riding in self-driving cars. The AIs will be programmed to avoid liability, so they'll do whatever they can to avoid a crash and maintain the prescribed distances. You'll be able to cut in front of them without worrying about them hitting you, because they'll automatically hit the brakes and back off. If a bunch of people want over at a merge point, they'll be able to just line up and cut in, blocking the AI to the back of the line.

They'll also set a speed on the highway and stick to it rather than speeding up and slowing down to mess with people. It's going to be great.
