There's also the hydraulics that pressurize the system that draw a bit of power from your engine, although if they use electric pumps it would be lower.

But, if the UK toyota version comes with an automatic, dual clutch, I'll test drive both - I recently drove the VW Polo GTI (1.4 litre supercharged and turbo'd, 180BHP engine with 7 speed DSG + paddles) and that was a really cool little motor, paddles for when you want to pick the right gear for a corner, auto for when you just want to be lazy and go to work in morning-zombie mode.

I don't think id miss anything from a manual trans like in my current car, clutch progression is overrated to me at the moment, because i dont go around drifting everywhere and id rather use a bike on a track day

wow WOT

TL;DR:
Manual if its not a dual clutch auto

in the US, manual tranny lovers act like snobs. like knowing how to drive stick is somehow an exclusive talent. it makes them feel cool, and boosts their ego...

it hasnt changed. This is one reason why VW's DSG tranny is not very enthusiast minded. even audi's S-tronic version auto upshifts. but not all DCT's are programmed alike. BMW's M-DCT and mitsu's SST both hold their gears at redline for as long as you like...

Alright I'll bite on this one.

Can you really blame the manual lovers for this? I could very easily say that people that have only driven automatics think that manual driving is impossible in a city or bumper to bumper traffic... When I would classify it as a slight driving inconvenience depending on the engine size.

The majority of the few new drivers are taught on automatic cars (the vast majority of cars owned in North America are auto), I myself started on one.

I have never been face to face with a person calling me a snob or an idiot for driving a manual transmission car. It's always been met with a certain amount of respect for buying my first car with a stick and "sticking" with it to the my second. If people find that arrogant then that's their opinion, though I would call them ignorant.

If owning an auto makes peoples lives easier then by all means go for it.

i dont find that people who drive autos hate on the manual tranny. it just doesnt happen much. in fact you yourself say that there is some sort of respect towards it. can you say the reverse? no... on forum after forum, mag after mag, website after website, there is a unique subtle bias against autos... remember when ferrari did away with manuals? people cried bloody murder... remember when the GT-R was revealed to be dct only? cries of boycott....

so nobody is calling you a snob for driving a stick. but you are a snob, if you hate on someone driving an auto... just sayin...

I know a few people who drive automatic and hate on manuals mainly because they hate having to deal with it in stop and go traffic.

they may not like driving manual, but im talking about hating on the people who drive manual. perhaps i wasnt clear. its about the people, and the car culture in the US. there is a distinct tone that if you drive stick you are somehow "better" than those who dont. meanwhile in europe, every other granny on the street drives stick...

I think it has a lot to do with the american perception that we need to be able to do everything except drive on the way to work. We need to be able to eat, talk on the phone, read (seriously, i've seen people with books on their steering wheel while going down the road,) etc. Having to focus on shifting the car yourself takes away from all that valuable non-driving that americans do on the road. It has bred a culture of people who never learned to drive stick so they have an odd fascination with the people that do know how to drive stick.

Now going the other direction, people that focus on driving stick develop their attitude of superiority partly because they seem to have this "mysterious gift" to shift your own gears. Though I find this is really only the case within the "performance driving" niche of drivers. The drivers who drive stick for so long that they know what to do to get the car to do what they want when they want the car to do it. The average driver that drives stick simply because it came with the car doesn't generally care that he's driving stick rather than automatic.

Now, maybe automatic transmission performance has changed over the past 6 years since I've not really driven an AT vehicle newer than 2004. But, for me at least, I despise having to mash the pedal to the floor and wait for the computer to decide that I want to accelerate faster and then downshift a couple seconds later than I would have liked. I suppose someone could take the time to learn to compensate for computer stupidity or go through the hassle of reprogramming the computer. I don't hate on the drivers of AT's as a whole, I hate on individuals who do stupid things because their car gives them less to pay attention to behind the wheel.

Unless you really like a stick shift there is no need to get a stick any more. The new paddle shifters are as effcient as sticks. If I had a stick right now I'd be taking a cab since my arm is in a sling.
Besides with a stick it's too hard to drink and drive. You could spill your drink. :happy0180:
