Megan Racing Strut Tower brace
For the cost conscious, the Megan Racing strut tower brace fits, but just barely. I installed it yesterday. It clears the top of the SC by about a 1/2 inch. Only $75. I have a pic but can't figure out how to size it down on my iPad.

So this is an interesting question/problem (with a solution) and something I have looked into a little bit with a few customer vehicles. Interesting thing is that we only had one customer out of about twenty forced induction vehicles that experienced the issue. So from what we can tell it is not too common but it does exist but from what?
As far as we can tell it is tip in knock and we have not yet determined, what it is related too. Such items we are looking at for a cause include fuel pumps, exhaust restrictions, intakes etc..., as these seem to be the differences that could be causing the problem. In the mean time we have come up with some updates to our tunes to accommodate vehicles that do happen to stumble across this problem, such as the one above and are in the final steps testing. We have been testing the update fix for some time now to make sure it does work and have found this to resolve the problem if you are having it. We are finalizing the update so that it can be applied to all our maps so that if you do or do not have this issue it will not affect the drivability of the vehicle for any of our tuned maps. If you have any questions please ask. Cheers, William Knose |

I think the stock engine mounts will enable contact if there's only half an inch when unloaded.

Can someone provide a brief explanation of the causes and issues associated with tip in knock? I've tried to search the topic on the general internet but I'm not sure I have a handle on the issue. I gather that it is detonation issues during the transition from light load to heavy load, but I'm not sure if its a function of the ECU not being able to respond fast enough to throttle inputs or due to tuning. In addition, I also can't tell how dangerous it is or what drivability issues it causes.

@brillo it's both, ultimately the tune/calibration is what stops it, but the proper strategy has to exist in the ecu to facilitate that.

You open the throttle and the air enters the engine instantly. The ECU takes a fraction of a second to realize this when measuring via MAF (a bit less with MAP). In that fraction you're running timing and fueling for cruise and not high loads. The ECU senses the rate of throttle change though, so it can compensate much quicker by looking at that. However, the stock values take into account ambient pressures, and normally aspirated VE (and may not be sufficient even NA...) not boosted. So one has to change a bunch of things related to that in order to reduce these events and their severity.
You can also overshoot with some of this, and too rich of a tip-in will cause knock as well. Quote:

I was concerned about that too, but the car was on the dyno yesterday and under full load the engine didn't move enough to touch the bar. Would the engine rock more on the street?
