The zzt231R Celica had a similar racket early on - caused by a serpentine belt tensioner. Toyota modified the tensioner which rectified the issue.

The racket you guys are experiencing sounds like it's caused by the tensioner/belt assembly, not exactly sure how it works on the 86/BRZ cos I haven't got the full RM to see. My money would be on it. Injectors make a light ticking noise (normal) not the cricket racket which is pretty loud (abnormal) !

After reading through everything on this thread I found a local gas station with non ethanol 93 octane. It was around 7-8 miles away. I filled up the tank with the new gas and ran the car through various RPM ranges for around 25 to 30 miles and the cricket noise is now gone. My tank was a touch under halfway when I put the new gas in. I will let everyone know if the noise comes back. Sucky thing is the non ethanol 93 octane cost around 4.27 a gallon .....BUT there is no longer a cricket noise...so.
You will get better mileage out of it for the higher cost.
Ethanol has a high octane rating but it's energy content is much lower than gasoline.
Can't bring myself to say gas for gasoline cos gas in Oz is gas[lpg etc] and gasoline is petrol.

The fuel pump is under the bonnet? Struth, then you got a very noisy pump which sounds unlike a fuel pump. Looks like I'm not due to receive my car for another 6 months so me hoping all the issues sorted by then. Very strange though.

It's the high pressure fuel pump for the direct injection, that's why it's on the engine so it's close to the injectors.
Same as a HP diesel fuel pump for direct injection which is also under the bonnet on the engine.
The pump for the manifold injection might still be up the back in the fuel tank?

OK, comprende now ! There's two ! Not very familiar with the D4-S system other than they have a diesel version (D4-D) on the Hilux & Cruiser. Either way, it's not acceptable, way too noisy.

They are noisier at idle, I think it might be the injector solenoids clicking on and off but the one at the dealers that i've driven twice, waiting for mine to arrive, is very quiet. Goes hard too, certainly no running in on this one so maybe people are farting around too much with running in?

well a scion/toyota person came to the dealer and looked at my car and the confirmed and acknowledged the chirp problem and told me that they cant do anything till they know of a fix (TSB).

in other news they did not fix my high beams and tried to tell me that they are working properly and instructed me on how to use my high beams. i told them do not insult me i was using them nightly before i took it to them and now they dont work. i made them show me and i could tell all it was doing was turning on the day time running light... he tells me that those should be running all the time. i told him i know but then why are they off right now

its so bad.

on what feels like a good note tho... they were supposed to replace the ECU but got the wrong part so they pulled my ecu out then tried to put the wrong part in figured out it was wrong then put my old ecu back in.... i dont know if that resets it or what but the drive home felt really snappy and the car had way more throttle response. i liked it.

My chirps are making me nuts. I'm getting THIS close to considering 2stroke oil.

LOL.

When I got my new Celica I was told by the head service technician (who I know really well) NOT to baby it, just drive it ! New cars of today do not require special babying when new. Performance of 86 is OK, body rigidity & steering is excellent. Reliability is ???
