I liked this part: "In Greek mythology, Pegasus – a winged horse – carried thunderbolts for Zeus." How appropriate! humfrz |

Kinda off topic. The maintenance schedule says to change the oil every 6000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. However, I don't drive my car anywhere near 6000 miles per 6 months. Would it be ok to wait 5000 miles or should I just follow the maintenance schedule? Many youtube videos with people showing how to change the oil say they wait 5000 miles on synthetic (ChrisFix for example) instead of waiting the 6 months.

You don't really have to change your oil at any set marker. Those are just guidelines. It's up to you to determine if it's time to change your oil or not. Since your afraid to drive a that much I would recommend two things. Wait till you reach that magical 6000 miles or 5000 which ever dork you prefer to listen too. Second sell car by a civic.

So if after 6 months my oil doesn't look like crap then how can I tell if it is used up? Also, how is idling severe? Why exactly is city driving worse for wear than highway driving?

IMO everyone's oil is plenty used up after 6 mos. I think it's a false economy to save money on oil because the life of your engine depends on it, but I've driven only performance cars for the past 25 yrs.
As far as hwy vs. city goes, 2 reasons I can think of involve moisture. With short city trips you won't always get your oil hot enough to dissipate the moisture that collects in the system, and moisture in the oil is no bueno for the engine. Same for the exhaust. It takes 15 minutes or so to dry the exhaust interior which will keep rust out of the inside. But for me, the big reason short drives are worse for the car is that they aren't as fun as longer drives. Cars like to have fun too, ya know. |

Well then I'll just keep following the maintenance schedule. I'll invest in a catch pan and a torque wrench so I can do my own oil changes and tire rotations. I recently put new headlights on so I think I can do these things too. I'll probably get a craftsman wrench to take advantage of that lifetime warranty instead of something cheaper

@NRXRaptor torque wrench isn't really necessary to do your oil change. "Tight enough" is good enough for an oil drain plug. Make sure you stop by a dealership and pick up a bunch of crush washers though or you might leak.

I've been on bitog recently reading Blackstone VOA's and UOA's. Good stuff but I'm not always sure I can trust Blackstone's suggestions which often asks us 86's drivers to try 8000 mile oil changes.
I've been doing Castrol Edge 0w-20 oil changes for about 45,000 miles and its worked good for 5000 mile oil change intervals. Great oil when its fresh and the engine loves it. However I don't think the oil holds up past a 5000 mile OCI, noting what feels like piston scrape on startup on cold days, and also rough running conditions on used oil once i get about 4000-5000 miles, depending on driving habits. Also getting about a quart of oil consumption per OCI lately. I might try Pennzoil UP on next oil change and see if consumption and oil stability long-term is better. From what I've seen on bitog they are very similar oils compared to Castrol, however bitogs VOA/UOA's might be somewhat outdated. Last edited by radroach; 07-17-2017 at 02:12 PM. |

Interesting observations regarding Castrol Edge! Thanks for sharing.
Have you tried Eneos 0w-20 or AMSOil OE 0w-20 in your motor? Quote:
