Best oil for the 86

I know this has been answered numerous times and I have searched on this and Bob is the oil guy forums

But what I want to know is
Simply which is the better oil for our cars
I have used rp not in the 86 in am Mr2 and it loved it

I'm using penrite ten tenths 0-20 racing oil

I have come to the conclusion it's best to use 0-20 according to bob is the oil etc

But
Is royal purple good I mean the api stuff
As it's a fresh motor 5K kms on it
And the royal purple says it may void warranty if you use the hps grade or the xpr

Now the car sees a fair amount of track work and the way I understand it the Sn and sl api grades tend to sheer down quite badly

So is there any UOA on different brands of oil with our cars to determine the better quality?

Anyone got links to voa or UOA for our cars using
Valvoline
Motul
Royal purple
Penrite
Etc

No flamers please
And please provide evidence if your going to bag another brand over another

I'm tossing up between
Valvoline syn power or the vr1 but it doesn't come in the 0-20 so probably not the vr1
Or the royal purple api or hps/ xpr

Just not sure if I should risk the warranty over oil or not but for the added protection on the track it might be worth the risk
Unless the api stuff will hold up ok

Hopefully bluesubie has some input as he seems to have a good understanding

I want the best oil for quality and protection and performance

Thanks guys :)

TGMO for me, I have a few good UOAs from hard track duty.

*also this should be in the Mechanical Maintenance section*

Sorry all the threads I looked at only asked the question between two oils then got really off topic
I hate to be that guy to make a new thread ahaha

Did you want to post them up or link me them

It's interesting you use the stock standard stuff
When those api Sn products tend to sheer down quickly

Very interesting

Sure, here is one from about 4 hours of track time (and about 600 road miles) before I had an oil cooler (which means oil temps probably in the 290 degree range)

Copper was only 1 ppm high, which is pretty standard for these cars (think mine had about 6K miles at this point) and I did have a small intake leak which increased the silicon.

Yeah right interesting

Anyone got any more info
To which oil seems the better quality for protection and performance

Thabks decay :)

My impression is that it is more important to change the oil regularly than the brand of oil used. That is not to say that some oils hold up better over time but if one is changing the oil sooner rather than later then the oil doesn't have time too start breaking down. My car approx 27k kilometers, 6 oil and filter changes. Diff and gearbox at 21k kms.

Yeah I have heard that aswell

What kind of oil are you using out of curiosity and what grade

bluesubie 11-07-2014 04:05 PM

As the sticky in the PCMO forum at bitog says, "There is no BEST oil!".

For the street, flip a coin an use any API SN/GF5 0W-20 oil. Be careful what you read at bitog though. Motor Oil University was written by a plastic surgeon and some people in the industry say it has a lot of errors.

Neither Valvoline VR1 nor RP HPS are API certified, but I would probably go with RP HPS 5W-20 if I hit the track. These cars see high oil temps at the track. There was actually a recent very funny thread about which oil to run in the 86 (well one of the last responses was funny). "Cujet" FTW!

I take my 0W-40 M1 recommendation back OP. Stay with the OEM recommended 0W-20 oil in your brand new car, don't bother with an oil cooler, let your oil temp climb, and enjoy your track days. Make a few high RPM downshifts, and don't worry, the ECU's programming will keep your engine completely safe.

If you consider the mileage on your oil (1,000 miles) against the universal averages (2,500), your copper is actually higher than that.

Aftermarket intake?

If someone has a link to that thread I'd be greatly appreciated

Also
What's penzoil ultra platnium like??

Is that good woild that be a good oil
The only real way is to do UOA testing
But thought I could start near the top ahaha

So the api royal purple Is good for the street
Or the Penzoil better

Is the 5w going to give best cold engine protection

Yeah, but considering the engine mileage, this is still in line with quite a few people who had copper PPMs in the mid-high 20s until well after 10000 miles.

Likely still break in, I'll report back after I get my current UOA from this past summer.

At the time of this reading I was using a Greddy intake.
