Guess how many cars I've raced in this thing, in a straight line....ZERO. It won't win at that. If I didn't live where I have to take constant twisty canyon roads and I didn't AutoX, this car would suck. I also wouldn't buy an automatic in this car.

Turbo it or sell it.

You will know if you love the car after taking the first sit in it.
Care to elaborate on why you wouldn't drive a Miata?

As you mentioned, the Mazda 3speed.... I know it is a quick car, and is a bargain comparing to other cars with similar performance, but I would never buy one, just because it does not have any appeal to me, to my eyes, as I judge its design poor, so as its built quality, and not to mention engineeringly speaking, I don't respect them, and it not just because it is a FWD. I used to love the R7s, and for sure these are the last Mazda that gain my admiration and respect.
"Their design, heredity, & technology." Then why are you upset with the amount of power? I'm not going to repeat what everyone has ever said about the twins on a thread like this.

People who buy this car and complain about power are like people who eat soup with a fork. You made the wrong choice my friend.

When I traded in my ~350 hp WRX, they said the BRZ was just as fast as that. HELP! I think I got scammed!

Wait ten years and then will have hopefully grown up and realize the many things you do not now have any concept of.

I had spent already over 4k on my new car; Sparcco wheels, 225/45 R17 , Invidia Q300 exhaust, summer tires, lightweight pulley from Raceseng, a Takeda cold air intake, a Carbon Fiber Driveshaft, and a few other cosmetic stuff, like all LED bulbs, Toms taillights, etc... The fact is, I can consider myself a proud owner of the very first car, with a front mounted Boxer engine, and RWD, that has the center of gravity lower than a Ferrari Italia, and now looks as gorgeous as an Aston Martin sportscar, but it still freaking super extremely slow, specially while in that nimble of power that happens in between 3k to 5k revs. So, I am now asking myself, should I expend about 6k more in this car, to solve my issue with a turbo, or should I wait for the 2015/2016 mid-life refresh, with lots of speculation going on within the industry, on how they are going to bring this extra power; if from a displacement increase, to 2.5L from 2.0; if from force induction; or even a hybrid system to boost (I personally dont like this last option)? What do you guys think? I am the only one dealing with this dilemma? I have my mind set in one thing, I would go back to Mercedes-Benz, for sure as soon as the CLA 45 AMG hit the US dealerships, I would trade my BRZ, if until then, the car was not able to bring the pleasure I expect from it. Comments?

It's disheartening to see people suggest a turbo for everything. Especially when there are plenty of options to stay N/A without spending nearly as much time and money or risk of engine failure. If additional torque is all you want, then getting a shorter Final Drive swapped in is precisely the way to go. Whether it's a MT or AT.

I agree.

I think if the engineers who designed this car weren't constrained by regulations the exhaust manifold would look like the HKS catless header and the tune would look a lot different. If a header and tune can eliminate the torque dip and gain 30 rwhp that would equate to about at least 240 advertised crank HP.

On the other hand even Randy Pobsts latest comments about the car were "needs a turbo. But I' m no Randy Pobsts and don't track.

Right now with EcuTek it's about 2 grand for a good header+tune which is just too much so many just throw another $4 grand at the problem and turbo.

But as open tuning becomes available and warranties run out I think a lot of people are going to find their sweetspot for this car with a catless header + tune.

First and foremost, keep the racing off the public roads. There's no need for that shit; that goes for you and everyone here in the forum. Secondly, you spent most of your money on mods that don't add any sort of performance (except for the pulley and exhaust). Thirdly, if you want to maximize the efficacy of said mods you need a tune. Finally, this was never ever a straight line monster. For the same cash you could get yourself a WRX, which would thoroughly embarrass most cars on the road. A simple tune on a WRX will also yield you more power than a small, hi output NA motor. Everyone tries to compare this with the K20, but it's not that either. As emissions and efficiency shape engine development for engineers, they have to compromise more and more. The K20 was built when some of those regs were more lax. That's why Honda is turning to turbos for the next Si. If you really wanna enjoy this car, go to the track or do some autocross. It'll get the need to race on the street out of your system and make you a better driver.

This is so so true, I've been roasted by some for saying this FA20 isn't near as strong an engine (power and durability) as the K20, F20c, or 2zz.

People from the digital age always think newer tech = better but it doesn't when governments steer technology and the design engineer makes a bad decision (saying no to DIT.) Same things happened with cars in the 70's.

The good news is that good tuning and a header is showing to undo some of the damage that the regulatory red tape caused.
