Why don't thank the great Fascist State of America for EDR. Now, with this kind of Big Brother surveillance technology, insurance companies can download your driving and assess liability to you (deny your claim) in an accident, and LEOs can charge you with violations of the law (unsafe speed, etc.). You only have to be going 46 mph in a 45 mph zone to lose the case. |

Maybe why they limited the 6AT cars to 2 or 3 laps for the media test drives.. interesting. I didn't even read the 6AT parts of the manual since I had no interest in the auto but that does kinda suck for anyone that intended on getting the 6AT and using it for DEs.

Yes the brakes have to scrub off more speed, the tyres handle more stress, and the engine will be at max capacity longer at an HPDE, but versus the standing starts, dead stops, and artificial maneuvers in AutoX, AutoX always felt to me like it was harder on the car. I guess I must drive like a little girl (no offense little girls) at HPDEs as in my mind I felt AutoX was less sympathetic to my car and nothing like enthusiastically using onramps. I highlighted felt as obviously I have no actual data to back it up

Autocross is "harsher" but I think he meant the heat buildup from doing a 25 minute or more stint on the track. My oil temps (with a small cooler) easily hit 290-300+ degrees on a 90 degree day at the track.. in a very very short period of time, but they NEVER hit anywhere near that in autocrosses, even "long" courses.. Heat kills, which is what I think he meant. The endurance race car sees the same 290-300+ on anything from a 50 degree day to a 100 degree day for up to 24 hours at a time.
I agree that autocross feels more abusive and there is more driveline shock (well assuming you can drive half way smoothly on track) in autocross.

It's an automatic gear box with "paddle shifters", what did you expect? In a $25k car I wouldn't expect the auto to do exactly what you tell it to do like a true paddle shift car would.

Didn't "expect" anything...but was hopefully optimistic Toyota would have incorporated programming to allow holding gears in a specific (Sport) mode.

It's true the AutoX won't be like an HPDE. But depending on the course, you can still reach temperatures that will lessen the effectiveness of lubricants. I see it all the time at RallyX events. I'm using Motul300 in my transmission and it will get notchier as the day goes on and the heat climbs. There are definitely enough loads on a car in AutoX and RallyX to make what fluids you use matter.

They way I read it, it'll downshift automatically to keep the engine from stalling. And it will upshift automatically if it looks like the engine will overheat. (hence the oil temp part). Seems to me you can bounce it off the rev limiter for a little bit if needed.
