What underpinnings would they use though? The 350/370z floorplan is probably where they would go to, but surely there must be something closer to the size of the 86 (which they would be mad not to compete with).

On an Aussie note, Holden should take note of the success of the 86 and get their new Torana in action

BMW might claim that *they* started it with the 1-series ...although there was much disappointment and gnashing of teeth when it turned out that instead of being the car that took BMW back to its roots it's just a minimally smaller and lower-priced 3-series.

I doubt that Nissan could get their Front Midship platform as light as the FRS/BRZ platform. Especially since they already lightened it for the current 370 from the 350. IMHO they're in just two different categories.

It's interesting. I'm curious to see if they are going to position it against the BRZ/FRS or if they are going to just replace the 370.

I'll give a lot if credit to Hyundai.

The Genesis cars (both the sports coupe and luxury sedan) were really, really ballsy moves for them at the time.

Edit: for Nissan the success of the Twins is part, but I think they may have been stung when Mr K himself said the Twins are closer to the original Z ideal than the new Zs are.

first cheap, light, RWD, 4 cylinder in a non roadster platform since what...'98? dont know about anyone else in this forum but i was excited 5 years ago when it was made official that the GC was coming out...i would even argue that if it would have been a complete failure in tyhe worlds markets then Toyota/Subaru may not have followed through with this platform... maybe im wrong

If the Genesis weighed 700 lbs less and provided a bit more snick-snickety feel, then perhaps.

But it doesn't, sooooooooo no.

The Genesis did miss the mark, to much disappointment all around, but it still could be argued that it got car makers on the right track. It could also be argued that the success of present-day versions of beloved '60s muscle cars got car makers thinking they could have similar success bringing back other popular genres.

Hm... correction in 3 things.

1. I wouldn't call +3,000lbs a "light". I call "light" is a car that's less than 2,800lbs. If that's the case, 3 series count in this.
2. since '98? No, think more. 3 series made cheap, light, RWD, 4 cylinder non roadster.
*316: '98~'05
*318: '98~'07
3. Lastly, you think Mx5 was only roadster, but outside of US, they made coupe since '98, so it'll add to the cheap, light, RWD, 4 cylinder nn roadster.

i apologize for thinking locally in USA only...
1. 2008 Mustang-4000+, 2008 G35-3600+, Genesis Coupe-3100+ (IMO it is "light" compared to every other 2+2 available at the time it came out...in fact if the 86 hadnt come out it would still be the "lightest" 2+2 in the US at least
2. ...but over here the m42b18 were used from 92-96 and were replace by the m44b19 from 96-98. they never had the 4 cyl E46's in North America.
3....please provide proof of this cause my google-fu must suck really bad...

BTW i have no vested interest in this opinion...it is simply car conversation so i apologize for the

1. '08 Mustang is 3,300~ 3,500lbs & not 4,000lbs. & here are other RWD that's near GC weight 2+2 cars.
330 = 3,300
Rx8 = 3,100
8C = 3,400

2. True, but fact still remain that BMW did make 4 cylinder 3 series

3. Here you go
