Yep, sounds like an excuse you would make. I wouldn't buy it either.

Yep, first gear and third gear on my old Chev pickup was anywhere between the steering column and the passenger door handle (literally).

OK, so there were (are) a few exceptions.

My steering wheel physically locks if I try to go on a mountain road. I think it's for my safety since I have an AT I can't handle something like that.

I found that unless someone younger than 20 is a car person or a budding gearhead they won't really engage themselves into learning manual

It's more of a why should they learn thing when almost all the cars there driving here in the US will be an auto. I tried to teach my best friends sister stick in an e36 m3 and she could figure it out with someone encouraging her but wasn't comfortable enough to be driving it alone.

Well it's like any other learned skill, there has to be a reason or desire to learn. It is no longer a "necessary" skill, so it is left to the rank of the enthusiast.

At this point your "standard" vehicle no longer even has an option for a MT, so most folks have no reason to bother.

My sons (29, 25, and 21) have ridden in cars with manual transmissions, and learned to drive one, but they have never been in a car with manual windows or door locks to my knowledge. I'm not sure they would know what to do if faced with one, but I'm sure they could figure it out.

Got a 2017 A/T. Mostly daily and some track events. Yes, the A/T shifting and downshifts are top notch specially for a torque converter setup! Only reason it's slower is the gear ratios. But! If you slapped on a 4.88fd like I did and some people here, it becomes a real beast even on stock tune. IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!! I work at a Toyota dealership, and I get to work on (release bearing failure wink* wink*, grinding gears wink* wink*) and drive a bunch of manual versions as well and still choose my A/T w/4.88fd.
