Was anyone at the SD tour? Seemed like an interesting battle in CS between an MX5, 370Z, and FR-S. Did weather affect the CS results?

Guy in third is on this forum, he's running the 245 width Yoko's..... I'd also like to read a run down of how the car performed against the 370Z, and MX-5...how the course was, etc etc.. Video would be great as well.

I used a craftsman 1/4" drive deep well for the rod, I think its a 10mm? fit the 3/8 max axess with no problem. Do you have the all chrome max axess set or the black set? When I was looking at the two in store side by side the chrome set seemed to maintain a bigger pass through, but I didn't bother to measure.

From RRA and some video I saw they were more speed maintenance courses so it probably helped the MX-5 but maybe hurt the 370Z. Not a lot of tight corners to dig out of.

Here are some videos of the course from the A-Mod car, which PAX'd #1 by like 1.2 seconds. Makes me want a A-Mod car. There is a cheap BM car forsale in NV for like $8800 fully sorted, makes me wonder why I spend the money on my BRZ.

The General Denver "downtown" is highly recommended. Probably the best beer selection in town (even though it'll be like 6 drafts)

I'm driving down late Friday, and leaving to come home right after competition on Saturday, but I'll be there.
The SD Tour was a blast! The course was very much a speed maintenance course and really played well to the attributes of how we set up the car, while seemly penalized the weight of the Z (the Z may have been a bit faster on fuller tread tires). I think the win by the MX-5 was more due to how well attuned that car and driver is to the SD surface. If the same sort of course was at El Toro, I do believe that we would have had the win.

If any lessons have been learned so far about car set up its that:

1) Adjustable shocks are worth it, as without them, we would not be able to properly adjust the car balance to the somewhat slippery surface of SD. We currently have Koni Yellows on car, but it does make me think about how good a MCS set up would be!
2) 245s on a 7" wheel can work and work well.
3) Yokohama makes a phenomenal tire!
4) Winmax pads are very good and using a more aggressive pad in the rear seems to be working and helping with trail-brake rotation.
5) The Tanabe FSB (22mm hollow) should not be overlooked. It's a very good bar.
6) Leaving Traction Control on for your 3rd run of day 1 is not the way to win it (MIKE!!!)

We also learned that locally they haven't seen an FR-S keep up with their hotshot MX-5 drivers...naturally they suspect we must be cheating...so I guess that's a compliment, right?

Mike should be able to post some video later this week. We are still in recovery mode.

I hear that... I did the same at Toledo Pro last year in Bill's car on my final run.

I tried an NC2 6speed MX-5 briefly last year (this should be the best non-MSR Miata), and I know of someone on the west coast who tried the same. Our conclusion was that the car was not good. The NC Miata is fine when lowered for STR but is a floppy mess that relies on bump stops in CS trim. Maybe someone has figured out how to make it not suck, but I didn't see it and neither did the west coast driver. I'll be interested to see how it does throughout the year but I don't see the advantage over the twins (or an RX-8, which is much more stiffly sprung then the Miata).

Good to know!! It seems the more slippery surface of SD rewards a softer set up. Maybe this is why it is pretty successful in that region?

If the surface had very little grip, their might be something to that for sure... I did notice that the MSR in BS (car that won RTR on the CS index at nationals) still had a smoking fast time, even on the BS index. With the limited grip surface, you mentioned you had to change the balance with shock settings, what exactly did you do? Was the car too pushy, or too loose?

The car was loose. We soften up the rear a bit vs the front. This allowed the car to "squat" bit more when powering toward the apex and give the rear the grip it needed. Stock torsen needs both wheels to have good contact patch to hook up well. Rear suspension felt like a wet sponge, but it was stable and confidence inspiring. I bet there would be less compromise with a good DA set up.
