I didn't. Have been using Navigon for a while, but not fussed on it either.

Going to try Copilot when the car comes down off the hoist.

I have been using Sygic but was a TomTom user before so was trying to get what I was used to. I actually quite like Sygic.

Not sure what maps are most current or regularly updated for NZ though. I thought TomTom with the user updating ability might have been more up to date although I've found the Sygic ones to be pretty accurate so far.

Be interested to see how you find the Sygic ones around the South Island as I'm doing a track tour down there in March with Playday on Track and will need the maps. Four tracks in seven days including Highlands.

I've been impressed with Sygic for a few map changes I thought it might not have - a couple of new roads that have only been added in the last couple of years - but never really got around to do any real navigation yet.

Kudos to you on taking your car out on the track. Personally I'm just happy avoiding all the potholes, dips, bumps, roadworks and detours down here in Chch.

I've been successful 'side-loading' Tomtom using a .apk file that I *ahem* found lying around somewhere. I think that the insufficient space' problems people have been seeing are related to the size of the /cache partition, which generally isn't shown to the user in the UI. Any largish install from the Play store will probably fail. I see that other platforms have had similar issues in the past and a few even have some hacks to get around the problem. I'll see if any might be viable in the next few days.

As for the RaceChrono - something just isn't right there. The store returns a 'not found' error, which simply shouldn't happen. There may be a misconfiguration at their end for this. There is a beta .apk file available from their site, and even though it looks like it installs, it just gives a generic 'Application Not Installed' error message. I still need to figure out how to get more details about the errors.

To install (or at least how I managed to get it to work):
  • Extract the toyota86.png.logo file from the attached .zip (do not use the attached .png file, it is here simply so it can be previewed)
  • Copy the .png.logo file to the root of a USB stick
  • Insert USB stick into head unit
  • Open up the secret 'General' settings (password is '123456')
  • The logo on the USB card should be available to be selected.

I don't think you need root to perform the instructions above.

Once you have selected a new logo, the USB stick does not appear to be needed anymore.

If later, you go back into the Logo selection screen, the new logo won't be shown so you may lose your custom image if if you switch back to another logo. You can make the new logo one of the permanent selection, by adding it to the /system/etc/logos directory (root required, with /system mounted with r/w access to be able to copy)
! nice!...is there something about "STI" for Subaru?

Now that I've figured out the format, it could be (almost) anything. I've written a tool to convert 8bpp bmps into the required format.

For now though, I'd be willing to convert a few by hand for people.

Just make sure that they are:
  • width: 360
  • height: 300
  • colours used: use a maximum of 220 colours (In something like Gimp, convert to indexed mode using a palette size of no more than 220). Ideally, you'd also restrict the palette to using 16-bit-safe colors and use dithering to avoid ugly gradient steps.

This image is placed centred on the 800x480 screen, so won't ever be full-screen.

If I find the time, I'd also like to see what I can do about replacing the Android boot animation.

I found this transparent, maybe fitting very well on black

Try this one. (From the .zip file, not the attached preview image).

I haven't been able to verify the output, but it should work. Let me know how it goes.

To get around the 'insufficient space' problem when installing apps

Prerequisites:
  • You need to be rooted
  • Install BusyBox (The app is actually an installer for a low-level linux tool. After installing the app from the store, you need to run it and then click on Install to install/update to the latest version of busy box)
  • Install 'Cache Fixer'

Steps to fix the cache
  • Run Cache Fixer
  • Under 'Move and resize your cache folder to', select 'Data'
  • A slider bar will appear. Drag it all the way to the right (say 100MB)
  • Make sure that Force ext4 FileSystem appears and stays checked
  • Click on 'Move cache'
  • The Cache Fixer tool will be granted superuser access a couple of times and eventually it should pop up a window saying 'Cache moved' (or something to that effect)
  • Go back to the play store and install the app that was causing the problem

The cache fixer apps states that the move is only temporary, and will only last until a system reboot (in our case, until you turn the car off). Next time you install a large app, you'll have to go through the process again.

I haven't used it to install TomTom etc mentioned here, but the process did allow me to install Angry Birds Star Wars, which I previously had trouble with.

Hey, you picked it. You want it different - give me a different image to work with!

I'm surprised there hasn't been a request from a certain user for a TRD logo.

Call me old fashioned. I kinda like the Toyota one but man, if you're offering a TRD one would be fab. Would look seriously cool n startup.

No idea how to get to the size needed though as I seem to only get percentages.
