It goes without saying that the entire reason there is a Toyota enthusiast backing is because of the partnership Toyota has had in the past with Yamaha, making the engines we still love.
4A, 3S, 7M, 1JZ, 2JZ, 2ZZ...and if my mind isn't mistaken, even the 3T-GE.

In any case, thats whats completely disheartening about this new Toyota coming out. They've had so much success in the past with Yamaha, making amazing engines, that a Toyota/Subaru engine just doesn't feel like a Yota engine at all. Like Toyota has abandoned their sport engine heritage, ironically, in a car that means to revive it.

/shrug

It doesn't matter. Years in the future my FT will have some old-school Toyota engine transplanted. In all likelihood it will be the AE111 version 'Blacktop' 4A-GE.

Dang, you just gave me an idea to do a 2JZ swap in this rascal. Hmm.

Interesting, why would you want to do that?

From what I could put together
Pro:
Strong
Possible WHP/TQ
Con:
Huge
Heavy
Probably wouldn't fit
Kill weight distro

I'm guessing here..

Not sure where you're getting this. The NA Boxers in the base Imprezas make about 170 hp. Granted, this is the 2.5L version, and the FT is due to get a 2.0, but no way does Toyota let the heart of the FT make only 140 bhp.

200, maybe. 180, maybe even more likely. 140.... not a chance.

Could you link the source please, I'd like to read more into it.

And doesn't the Subaru site say the N/A motors produce 170bhp?

For me, a Toyota block with Yamaha heads is as much a "Toyota engine" as a Subaru block with Toyota heads. IIRC, contrary to popular belief, Yamaha had no involvement with the JZ series engine. I stand to be corrected on that bit.

Rubbish. Not a chance. Those reports where about a few onths before the concept debuted. This thing will be between 180 - 230ps. Expect no less. In fact, anything less and it'd be a huge let down in terms of expectations.

i was surprise when they announced that FT86 will be powered by a H4, ever since i know toyota cars all of its sports cars was powered by a yamaha 4ag(z)e, 3sg(t)e, 1jzg(t)e or 2jzg(t)e, 2zzge and more. Is toyota cutting its partnership with yamaha? hope not

I highly doubt that. I'm pretty sure Toyota will keep the partnership w Yamaha. I think, Toyota is just helpin' out Subaru lil bit.

180 base is my guess as well. Any lower than that and the only real upside to using the boxer vs. a toyota GE engine is the lower center of gravity.

Well you'd never convince me of that, seeing as how I helped my friend pull one from a JZA70 Front clip and put it in his mk3.

Maybe my eyes were deceiving me.

The more I think about it, the more I think this car has a chance to be the next real Integra. Maybe not face distorting power from the factory, but potential. A lot of potential.

And that is a definitely a good thing.

I like the idea of an H-4. While I do love my 4ag I think equal length headers on the flat four will produce a great sound especially if they up the rev limit.

I have seen subaru's with 9k rpm limits, weather they built the motor for that purpose is unknown to me.

Does anyone know when valve float occurs in the current 2.0 boxer?

500rpm below that would be safe and well within DD limits.

Also note that most (90%) of subaru's that are being tuned and the sounds we hear are turbo cars. If you turbo any engine the exhaust note is different so don't be scared.

It would be great if toyota would put in a traditional I-4 or even better an I-6 but the low CG is what will make this car I think.

Like some other forum member said, low CG is the new crack!

I have never heard a flat 4 with ITB's though....that prolly sounds like heaven!

Just found a vid....ITB's SNARL ON A BOXER

Turbos act as mufflers so they can quiet things down a bit, but they don't "change" the exhaust note, as far as I know. What will change the tone itself is the style of header. WRX and STI come factory with an UEL header which gives the car that characteristic boxer rumble.

That sounded awesome. Wonder is that was with an EL or UEL header?

FYI, here's what the factory UEL header sounds like when mated to a bad ass exhaust setup (in this case, Ansa).

Just listen to the car as it slowly rolls out, around :017 in.
