I'll take the FR-S standard stereo buttons over these bad touch screens any day.

Ohh, boy this is disappointing. I really hate touch screens... look at this list: Audi MMI is #6 on the list and it still blows this system out of the water!

http://www.driverside.com/auto-libra...nt_systems-807

What's this Toyota Entune system and why don't we have it on both cars already? The article was written Feb. 2011:

"
Availability: Limited availability later this year.
Key Strength: Apps
Breakdown: Apps are the buzzword in telematics these days, thanks to the wildly successful App Store for Apple's iPad and iPhone, as well as those for Android and other phones. Toyota is embracing the app revolution with its new telematics system, called Entune.

Entune, like most modern telematics systems, incorporates some basic safety features. Bundled under the Toyota name Safety Connect, it basically offers OnStar-like capabilities such as accident alerts, roadside assistance, and so on. Entune also offers up HD and XM radio, USB connectivity, Bluetooth streaming and phonebook connectivity and a good ol' CD player.

But what sets Entune apart is apps. The system will debut with several apps already installed, including Bing, iheartradio, MovieTickets.com and Pandora. These aren't just add-ons either; they're fully integrated into the system. For example, the navigation system is integrated with Microsoft's Bing, which will make searching for destinations easier. OpenTable.com's application will allow you to not just find local eats, but make a reservation too. Afterward, you can buy your movie tickets with the Movietickets.com app and listen to your customized music playlist with Pandora. Download the Entune app onto your smartphone, pair it with your car and you're good to go. Updates to the system will occur with updates to the Entune smartphone app. Entune also integrates what Toyota calls an "advanced conversational voice recognition system." Like the advanced OnStar system, it is designed to reduce the number of commands you have to memorize and make it more intuitive to just "talk" to your car."

That's horrible. If they were going to use a crappy interface, the least they could have done was upgrade the components to make it less laggy. Flash memory and processors are super cheap compared to the components used in computers/headunits made years ago..

The nav system in the BRZ seemed like a great added value over the unit in the FR-S, but seeing now how horrible it is, it almost seems like the worse of the two.

No wonder we see more and more custom tablet installations in cars. Most oem and ever after-market head units just don't seem to cut it anymore, and rightfully so, they are far behind.

oscar mike eh? i picked up on that. Zelda is a double win. laggy interface, slow responses and no scrolling ruin this. i can deal with low res as my eyes will be on the road but still. cmon now subaru. you said this was the nav unit thats in a new impreza? any chance it'll get tuned a little before the brz's arrive? maybe? hopefully? i guess i'd rather have this be the weak spot of the car than the overall dynamics

Toyota designed the interior, wish they had put a Toyota headunit in it. I've seen commercials for this system in the Camry and stuff, seems pretty slick. Lightyears ahead of this crappy headunit anyway.

Yeah scion dropped the ball, all they had to do was use Entune! But charging us $849 for a the bespoke? But in Scion defense we have not seen a bespoke fully working yet. Everything has been prototype. The Zypr system is not on, and the apps run on the Zypr cloud not all on your phone from what I gather from the Zypr site.

I still say pioneer app radio 2 or some kind of Android car stereo head unit...

I'm not saying I need to have a high-def screen with apps and all that BS (who the f**k needs Angry Birds while driving?!) but a smoother interface would be nice. You know, one where you don't have to tap a button three times before it scrolls...

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know when Aha will be available on the BRZ?

Also, does anyone know how the voice activation system works?

Watching the video again, it seems there are many instances where it's not really the screen's fault that the presses aren't registering, but that the user is not actually hitting the button.

Hoooooooowever, I am not placing the blame on the OP. If the interface is soo bad that it is difficult for a user to hit the buttons while parked and focusing their attention on the machine, how hard will it be to use while I'm driving. Not very encouraging.

This is one thing that drove me nuts about using my old iPhone in the car, there was no way to make the pause and track buttons a reasonable size and I often spent several seconds hammering away at the screen before I hit the right thing.

Trying to hit miniscule buttons while paying attention to driving is like playing pin the tail on the donkey. Another instance where you wonder if the people who make the product ever actually try to use it.

The HU in the Canadian BRZ will be different; it's the Pioneer AVIC-X9310BT. It appears to lose one feature - voice activation - while gaining another, DVD playback. Can anyone who knows more compare the 2 units?
