Regarding the good record of the 86/BRZ sales in Japan, it seems both Toyota and Subaru appear in a lot of advertising campains there. In fact, one of my friends in Japan has just posted it my FB wall, there is a special radio program going on the air in Tokyo in this morning, narrated by a famour DJ for a couple of hours.
http://www.j-wave.co.jp/holiday/20120320/ This program offers even test drivings in public events today (holiday in Japan) and in some coming weekends. https://www.j-wave.co.jp/topics/1203_86.htm Last edited by yajin; 03-20-2012 at 03:09 AM. |

I'm sick of seeing 350z, is250/350s, porsches, and s2ks in los angeles streets. I wouldn't mind seeing FRS and BRZ at every corner.

To everyone, who are questioning uniqueness of this car, you are missing the major point.
It is an IMPORTNAT car. Its a lot of 'first': FIRST Subaru's true RWD sports coupe FIRST boxer front placed engine car with low center of gravity FIRST with non-turbo 2 litter, which gets you 200 bhp. For crying out loud, 1 bhp per cubic cm for a non-turbo was unheard of till very recently in mass production. Its a huge motoring milestone, for those who understand. Even Audi with their super-popular A4 2.0T only boast 211 or so bhp. FIRST in a long time of such composition and design at this price point (30k) FIRST car since MX-5 (1st gen) that has potential to be much better. And remember, MX-5 became legend in pre-environmentalists and over-safe world, before all restrictions and regulations were pushed on us. Then it only became fatter and bigger. For Subaru its maybe the first car that was engineered with such passion. For those of you who owned and drove pre-90 RWD cars its a no brainer. We are looking at a future classic here. These don't come around very often, 15-20 years apart, maybe. Those of you who only drove post-2000 cars, you won't understand since you have nothing to compare it with and all you've seen was turbo and supercharged FWD nonsense with smaller and smaller engines to meet Euro-4 and Euro-5 emission standards. Mid-90ies, there is hope for you, if you've lived in Europe or Japan or didn't drive pure muscle cars. If you look at this car from this point of view, and give me an example of at least two other cars of the same importance for us, drivers, since 1998 except MX-5 and Porsche 911 with its relatives, then you'll understand that we didn't have such a zenith in a long time. Its a future classic, maybe one of a few ones left in this battery-electrical nonsense world, which Toyota is killing with their Scion plans in NA. Still have questions why it should be kept unique or why Scion was not even mentioned at opening ceremony? How it affects the value of this car? Be my guest. |

b16a was producing 160hp yearssssssss ago and ae111 20v 4age produce 165 i think toyota claimed and the 2zz was about 188hp.
So they are all at or over 100hp/litre and all quite old now. Still, it's still avery good figure, but not as impressive as it's made out to be in the above post. |

I didn't say it was a bad figure, or that it's commone, but when there have been engines doing it for as long as they have been (15years=ish for b16a??) it's hardly the big deal the OP made it to be. he actually said it's the first 200hp n/a 2litre and that 100hp/litre was unheard of until recently. 15 years isn't exactly recent....
100hp/litre is great power. But it's not the most important factor of the car. |

I think he may have meant it's the first Subaru to hit 100hp/L power density naturally aspirated; that would be true. As far as 15 years not being recent...it is. We're way off-topic though. So...
I think this is going to be like every other hot car unless BRZ production/export to the United States is kept artificially low, which I doubt. I do not, however, doubt that this car is as important to Subaru as it is to Toyota. Obviously, Subaru wants to sell this car, but I've postulated before that I think their gain in this is the chassis/platform itself rather than sales of the car itself. Whereas, for Toyota their success is contingent upon selling as many of these as possible. Regardless of targeted or projected sales figures, the Subaru at least, will be sold in limited quantities. Just for numbers: in 2002 Subaru sold 18K WRX. Those were considered sold under "limited quantities" and under similar pretenses, but 18K is NOT limited. Nowadays you can find one at invoice, though they are harder to find on the lot as compared to other models. Why would you buy off the lot anyway though? |

even with 100,000 worldwide, you can bet it will be exclusive for the first couple of years

I have mixed feelings on the chatter about increased production.
I don't want to see BRZ's / FRS's on every street corner. I'd like them to be exclusive and rare. I hate having the same car as everyone else. I can tell you that if I were paying full MSRP or higher, I'd be ready to back out and not buy the car by now. They've been trying to justify higher pricing due to limited quantity, and that makes sense to me and everyone else. But now they seem to be going back on the limited production theory.. if they've already announced one increase in capacity capability, they can certainly do that again and again in the future. Subaru and Toyota need to make money on the venture... obviously.. The only good thing I can see from the talk of higher capacity is that it might indicate that they intend to keep the price low (sub $25k). Expanding production means they can spread out more of the fixed costs and keep pricing down. So rather than having to fight to keep demand high to justify the sales, they may be willing to keep price down to generate demand as well. So that is the silver lining. |

Maybe it's the conspiracy theorist in me, but maybe they are upping production because of feedback from the US regarding price targets.
Maybe they need a higher order quantity to drive pricing down to the level that we are demanding, with the yen/$ imbalance. They are seeing such a high demand early on, that they are biting the bullet and placing those 100K orders, to secure lower prices. I'm sure its a gamble for all parties, but in the end it should drive our prices down, or at least make it more profitable for Subaru/Toyota. |

If you want a rare car you should probably look elsewhere. This isn't a Pagani or a 1M. The more cars out there, the cheaper the parts become and the larger the aftermarket suppor. I don't get all this rubbish talk about wanting a mid $20k car to be rare. |
