I'm toying around with doing this. I have an old Pioneer AVH 4200 right now and it's apple interaction is crap on a good day. I'd need to find a good headunit to run in conjunction. Anyone have any recommendations?

This is absolutely true. Apple's DA converter is really good and when Alpine was designing a head unit to use with iPod and iPhone solely and to replace the CD all together they quickly realized that their DA converters in their decks couldn't compare. Android may have more customization compared to Apple (non jaikbroken devices) but the sound quality isn't good. The source unit for your system needs to be the strongest link in the chain...garbage in, garbage out.

All that said, after taking delivery of my BRZ I don't see the added benefit of swapping to an iPad mini. A full size iPad would make far more sense but then there will be TONS of relocation of controls that is time consuming and expensive. Can I do it? Of course, no prob. Will I do it? At this point I setiously doubt it unless someone has to have it and is willing to pay me what its worth to get it done and done right.

I wholeheartedly disagree. My iPod sounds like crap compared to my phone (even with sound enhancements off).

You can't make a blanket statement like Apple > Android in sound quality, because, unlike Apple... Android actually has variety. Some devices have really crappy DSPs/DACs, some do not.

And regardless, it makes no difference what device you're playing music on if the sound quality of the file is crap. Some songs bought off iTunes are compressed to hell. I can physically hear the difference between an iTunes song and a 320kbps ripped MP3. So let's curb the Apple enthusiasm and be a little more realistic. LOL.

Has nothing to do with apple enthusiasm. And you are totally correct about android being on many different devices from many different manufacturers. I'm simply stating Alpine's results when building their decks based solely around iPod and iPhones. I don't get into the android/apple debates because 1. I think they're pointless and there is no real winner and 2. I honestly don't care. I know for me and what I do for a living Apple is the best fit and I've tried to get android apps to do what I needed and they weren't available at the time and being that all my work is done on iMac and MacBook Pros the iPhone/iPad integrate the best for my personal setup. I also build electronics to work with many devices and as you stated earlier with android being an open platform for many companies its easier to tailor my products to Apple first and android after.
There may be android devices out with better DAC's than apple devices at this point in time and I couldn't tell you what devices those would be but I do know what Alpine found in their research in building decks solely for iPods and iPhones. I hope this helps clear up my previous statements.

Yes, and looks really bad. I couldn't live with something that ugly in my dash. Even with the size of the screen there is going to have to be some relocation and mods to make it look slick.

sadly everytime I research this all I find are dozens of examples of how its mounted to the dash. to me the real problem is the radio install. What headunit do they use and how are they connecting everything.

I'm wanting to do one where the tablet controls everything. The more I look into it I keep thinking using the 3.5mm or bluetooth for sound and just give up having am/fm is the best option.

I used a combination of things:

www.slotmount.com - used a hair dryer to bend it flush

http://www.clingo.com/on-the-go/universal-mobile-neklit - I removed sticky stuff it came with and replaced with stickier stuff used double side 20lb rated tape to attach to mount

Ipad is still removable from base and adjustable

Spent about $45 bucks

I connect to stock deck via Bluetooth

Whoever did or will put a mini in their car look this up "Bad Elf GPS for iPod touch, iPhone, & iPad"

The Bad Elf GPS is the best selling Apple approved external GPS accessory designed to directly connect to your iPad, iPod touch and iPhone. The Bad Elf GPS accessory plugs into the dock connector and allows Apps to read your current location. To simplify your search for great Apps, the company have categorized many Apps that they know work well with a Bad Elf GPS by your favorite activities. (They even have a partneship with one of the nav apps to offer a combo price)

For those that want to mount an iPad mini but dont want to spend $459 on one that have a GPS, there's always external GPS receivers such as the Dual XGPS 150 [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Dual-Electronics-XGPS150-Universal-Smartphones/dp/B004M3BICU"]Amazon.com: Dual Electronics XGPS150 Universal Bluetooth GPS Receiver for iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch, iPhone and Other Smartphones, Tablets and Laptops: GPS & Navigation[/ame]
