How nice, but I think this one would fit better:

oooh there are plenty, but the insane amount of quality assurance programs at auto manufacturing facilities makes them very very minimal.

If you get a car to a lot with something missing, owners typically freak out.

As a current Japanese Auto Manufacturing employee in a powertrain plant allow me to debunk all this "pre-broken in" bullshit. Engines are not "broken in" at all before they go in a car. They're warmed up and revved to 4500rpm ish rpm and checked for noise and leaks. 1 in about 100 are actually started and ran. The rest get tossed in a big metal shipping crate and sent to the vehicle plant.

From there they go out of said crate onto the front subframe and have the tranny and front suspension bolted on. Then they're jacked up into the car. The car gets to the end of the line and they run the mortal dog shit out of it (redline being normal) on a dyno like wheel and slam the brakes on. Then they go through the rain tunnel and are checked for leaks.

The various drivers a new car sees before you get it dont "break in" the car. Most just drive it like it's a sports car or an economy car.

Yeah, I wish we could have seen some VINs. That Ultramarine FR-S looked just like mine! (and all the other Ultramarine FR-Ses out there. ) Any info on when this was actually recorded?

Gotta love that music brings back memories of when I did contract IT work for Bodine Aluminum (Toyota plant) in Jackson, TN that built V6 / V8 engine blocks and transmission casings.

Our Andon plays "life goes on" by the Beatles whenever someone does something they really shouldn't be doing. There's also take me out to the ballgame, the theme to superman and several other not so catchy versions of famous songs.

I watched it again, the entire time hoping (and for some reason, expecting) it would play the Legend of Zelda theme.

It's done to bed in the piston rings..... the engine will take many heat cycles to expand and contract and allow the parts to wear together, that's what the breaking in is. It's also why giving it some beans when it's properly warm early on isn't a problem.

IMO breaking in is being mechanically sympathetic..... be gentle when it's cold and slowly build the revs once it's warmed up. Also don't forget that it's not just the engine that needs breaking in; clutch, gearbox, brakes as well.

These are brand new cars with stone cold engines that you can bet weren't abused at the Japanese end of the journey. The US has got plenty of people looking for jobs, especially non skilled numbers like this.
Just sack the bastards. They deserve more than that for abusing other people's property that they are being paid to look after.
Part of the inspection is checking all operations of the vehicle. They check everything, its perfectly normal. If you think that's bad, the STI had a clutch dump procedure as part of the PDI that required a clutch dump at 5000rpm.

This statement is correct. The engine is not fully broken in when it leaves the assembly plant.

Though engine tolerances have improved substantially over the last 20 years, brake in procedures should still be followed. Do I follow them? Nope. But you still see higher rates of bearing and ring wear during that first 1000 miles. The last few race engines I've built never saw any type of break in, but they weren't really meant to last 100k miles either. Just my .02
