I want to overtake a transit van doing 40k up a hill instead of being stuck behind him for 25 minutes (the current situation)

since you are in Australia, maybe the Harrop SC kit would be a better option since you would have local support. I saw the prices though and it was a bit expensive lol, but I guess you get what you pay for. I am not a big fan of the visible lines running out of the manifold and over the engine though.

I personally think that our cars are not as underpowered as everyone thinks they are. just downshift into the appropriate gear and put your foot down. it's not mind blowing fast, but it gets the job done.

Read through this all including Ichi's awesome post's. I also see you almost have exactly the same car I do and we're in the same country even!

I don't have a build thread, but you can see the mods I went for in my sig.

My own build is primarily focused around being a DD with that little bit more. Also I notice, amusingly enough, that no one has really talked about that great big elephant in the room called warranty.

After constant research and a growing amount of seat time I discovered things about my own car that annoyed me in one way or another so little by little (keeping warranty in mind) chose complimentary mods that I feel have helped flesh the car out a little.

From a cosmetics stand point, those terrible stock brake lights being tossed for clear TOMS', being an AT the shifter looked rubbish so in came a really sexy aluminium and leather STI one. Same with the push start going to an STI one and popping in a nice black powder coated centre console garnish around the heated seats control (as it looked unfinished).

I love my audio so researched a nice 7" touch screen nav unit and replaced all my speakers and added an amp and a reverse camera. This was so worth it. I notice you your self mentioned not liking the stock audio. Its actually the very first mod I made. Not wanting to introduce weight I went for a really compact 4 channel amp mounted behind the opposite rear seat (left side seeing we are RHD) to help with weigh balance, Kinda like how the battery is on the left side to help counter the weight of the driver. Also replaced all the speakers, but stopped short of doing any sound deadening. Deadening would improve sound quality and help with some NVH in general, but I really didn't like the idea of adding weight.

From a performance perspective I'm a long time lover of NA so decided that was the way I would go. First was a simple STI drop in filter in the airbox. Damned if I could notice much difference, but I'm taking the 'all the little things add up' approach. The next mod was a real eye opener with swapping the stock 4.10 FD to a Cusco 4.556 and, while the guts of it all was out, figured I'd throw in an aluminium drive shaft. Sorry I can speak to the two mods separately (as they were done together), but wow. Everything felt tighter like there was no slack in the drive train. Throttle response improved, fuel economy dropped slightly, every gear now accelerates around 11% faster or so.

All those mods sourced and fitted were about $7500aud so far.

Next on the wish list will likely be some Crawford Power blocks, which will push the power band a few hundred rpm down and fatten up the low end tq a little at the expense of losing a little top end. Remember it s DD so I'm looking to improve lower RPM tractability. These can and will be added without needing a tune.

Will then look to add some Tein Street Flex-Z suspension with a view of improving the ride and handling together (strongly recommend you take a look at those, good bang for buck). At that time I'll also look at doing some light bracing. These last hand full of mods will round out spending to be at around $10k.

Once Warranty ends my wish list would be an E85 Flex Fuel custom tune with likely ACE (Equal Length) ceramic coated headers, stock cat back to keep the nose down and finally some forged 17x8 BBS wheels with 225 Tyres. The custom tune will also mitigate any of the negatives of going with the earlier mentioned Crawford power blocks.

I have not regretted a single mod so far and would do the same all over again.

Thanks for your reply

I'm getting either the Pioneer AVIC-F80DAB or F88DAB + Rev-Camera with sound deadening and a handful of Morel speakers. Not sure if I'll need an amp, but I'll check out the available options.

Interesting comments about the Cusco FD mod, I hadn't even considered it for the BRZ, but it makes sense as the gearing already feels very tall. I was thinking of doing a similar thing to my motorbike about 7 years ago - changing the ratios so it sped up faster, but lacked top speed. Seriously, there is so much unused space on my speedo now - 110kmh being the top legal speed in the state.

* Edit * - your fuel consumption is a worry. I'm getting 9.3 and that's spanking it up and down a mountain each drive. Proper spanking it.

Car Mods Australia are a Cusco importer. I also got the aluminium drive shaft through them if interested. Great vendor and the prices were very competitive (read cheaper than importing it myself).

After that mod I sat 300rpm higher in each gear. The trade off is I now found higher gears more usable so it didn't effect me much. Look through my fuelly profile below. but bare in mind that as I only live 11km from work the car barely gets a chance to properly warm up like ever. This coupled with the longer stationary warm ups in the morning would / has destroyed my economy.

I had a 5.7L Monaro AT as my last performance car and that drank 20L of premium 98 / 100km so the current 11ish is not all that bad in my eyes. I have no sympathy for economy. No regrets on that stance so far

If you are worried about fuel economy then leave the car stock, but then you wouldn't be asking these questions around boosting performance then would you? As with every mod you do, you need to properly research the con's as well as the pro's to it.

Edit: I typed a boo boo. I meant to say my fuel economy actually improved and meant to say my fuel use dropped. I went from an average of around 12L / 100km to around 11L. Fuelly is an average over the life time of the car so it will drop, but slowly as more fill ups are added. Case in point you will notice my early fill-ups were around 14L/100km.

1. Header and a tune
2. lighter wheels (not hard too, those OEM wheels are as heavy as they are ugly. (17x8) with upgraded 225/45/17 rubber
3. Upgrade brake pads and fluid
4. Shifter and diff bushings
5. exhaust
6. Enjoy!

I'm sure there would be some money leftover for fun. As is the BRZ is really a solid package. The tires are by far the biggest weak point from the factory, but lets be honest it's a "tuner" car and is begging to be customized to your desire.

You're chewing almost as much fuel as my WRX! I was more concerned for your vehicle than for my wallet.

You know, from what I've read, a proper tune will actually improve economy.

Twin ownership has been one of the most cathartic experiences of my life. 3rd gear acceleration and the wail of that engine as you wind it out in a 70 zone and realize you're still doing 60...

See this is the problem I see with going FI. I honestly don't see a person having quite as much fun in some parts of the world like our own with 50 and 60kph zones everywhere and draconian law enforcement. I'd also be too worried about hand grenading the engine and what load it would have on other components. I have a great deal of respect to people that take the gamble and walk that path.

Whoops it happens. I'd reccomend skipping the wheels, but still buying the tires and alignment. That'd leave ~300 in the pocket and net an equally as fun/fast car.
