If they give you extra keys and you don't have anyone else who's interested in taking one, I'll snag one.

Anyone else concerned about this?

http://www.theverge.com/2016/1/16/10...essors-skylake

I'm currently running a Haswell chip so I'm far from needing an upgrade anytime soon. Been holding off on jumping to windows 10 since I heard there were some compatibility issues awhile back with older software.

Which part are you concerned about?
The win7, 8.1 not supported with future processors or win10 only working with new processors?
Or both?

I'm not worried about either TBH.

Pretty much both but more so on the fact that the newer processors aren't compatible with older OS (currently have three built computers running 8.1). The other thing was that it seems like support for 8.1 is dropping so quickly when it has only been around for roughly 2 years? That and Microsoft has been quick to drop support for their users recently (was an early adopter of Zune and windows phone 7).

In hindsight I'm probably just being cheap and an upgrade to a newer processor would require switching out the motherboard anyways.

All in all this might be for the best? Just a bit butt hurt about how Microsoft has been handling some of their previous products in recent years

The "logic" behind it makes sense.
Especially over the long term since win10 is going to be updated as a service instead of releasing new operating systems.
Also, previous OS releases won't be able to take advantage of certain things (DX12, speed shift) without major updates.

The forced upgrades are a pain. I had my work machine running 10, a Surface Pro 2. WHAT A MISTAKE! The processor chugged and chugged with runaway processes. The battery drained. The external battery keyboard stopped working. Basically, it made the machine a total fucking mess. I'll upgrade when I have absolutely no choice, and this is with a Microsoft-designed product. WTF!

I've been on Windows 10 for a while now and have to say I am pleasantly surprised, thought I would hate it but actually like it quite a bit. Seeing as they offer free upgrades to windows 10 and that most bugs have been fixed I'd say I'm not too worried and don't think anyone should be worried

It's because 8.1 was a complete and utter failure, it's interface is shit and they alienated a lot of their customer base with it (hell I was considering going to Linux/Ubuntu before windows 10 came out, skipped 8-8.1 entirely). They are cutting their losses with it and focusing on their new and much better OS, can't blame them for that really.

Also it's nothing new that they're doing with windows 8.1, zune, windows phone. They drop things that are not profitable, can't really blame them for it either. That being said, they are continuing support for it until 2023, it's just that it's support for existing architectures/technology and not ongoing support for new technology.

That's the main issue with Ms working on both Win 10 and 8.1, they use completely different architecture and the steps required to make a program work on both OS is completely different, therefore it makes sense that they move towards support of the new OS only. I agree the initial issues were atrocious but they are in the past now and since dev's and software/hardware manufacturers figured out how to work with Win 10, everything has been going smoothly.

If/when it comes time for me to build a new computer I will be buying Windows 7 off Ebay. There are a couple of things I don't like, in principle, about Win 10. The fact that it phones home even if you switch off all the send options and there is no choice of what updates to install. The "important" update that just installed the Win 10 upgrade icon in the icon bar drove me nuts.
