We had a similar fad, I think it's gone but only to be replaced with "grown" men wearing track suit joggers, keeping their hand(s) in the garment playing with their thing.. what's that about???

Just taking hold? Dude that came and went years ago here. The only ones still doing it here are upper middle class white dudes that have no clue it passed them by and it is just them and their buddies still doing it.

Anybody in here smart with OBD connectors?

I'm super confused.

So when I was tuned on Ecutek last year, one of their recommendations was that if you plan to use the Ecutek Connect BT OBD plug then you should get an OBD extension, otherwise the plug isn't guaranteed to work all the time. I noticed this to be true if I had the Connect plugged in directly, there were times that it would power on but the data connection seemed faulty. But every time I plugged it into an extension first and the extension into the OBD plug it worked fine.

Then the issue from last week came up with that P3 Gauge, where when it's plugged directly into the OBD port it works completely fine every time. But I tried 3 different OBD splitters plugged directly into the OBD port first, and none of them worked.

Until... I tried daisy-chaining by plugging my OBD extension into the port first, the splitter into the extension, and then the P3 into the splitter. This daisy-chain works fine but gives me a metric shit ton of cables to figure out how to secure.

I know I've heard our OBD port can be faulty but I don't get this. What does the extension do differently here to work more consistently?

Resistance, noise, timing, other things. Every wire is a resistor, antenna, etc, and Im not sure that the OBD standard accounted for anything but a single device connected to the computer. So no, I can't tell you exactly what is going on, but it's not too surprising that the configuration you have the wires in matters.

We really take consumer electronics for granted these days, forgetting that a shit ton of work and testing went into the standards and interface hardware that lets most products be mostly idiot-proof.

The factory connector isn't designed for frequent connect-disconnect cycles. Using an extension moves the eventual failure mode to a relatively inexpensive replaceable part. My extension has held up well. I have it glued into the little box in front of the gearshift.
