Well, mostly just a tune and exhaust and its healthy gains
200whp looks very possible as long as intake side of head is ported. I had a feeling there was going to be a bottleneck somewhere in the head.

200whp?! The tuners in that thread stated that the intake side of the engine is preventing them from making more than 165 whp. So you're assuming that a modified head with better flow will give you 35 additional whp? That's highly unlikely.

The gains they published in that thread for a tune are somewhat impressive, but let's not get carried away here. They even said themselves that fixing the intake flow blockage should yield around 180 whp.

I'm not assuming just ported head. Cams, manifold, the works.
NC miata was able to make 200whp iirc from cam, itb, and a nice header.

Yeah sure, if you're gonna get into serious modifications of course 200 whp is possible. Any 2.0 liter engine worth a damn these days can easily achieve that power figure.

I don't consider some head work a too serious mod

Ported heads and aftermarket cams not serious work? That's more serious work that added forced induction.

What's your idea of serious work? Adding forged internals, blueprinting the engine, stroking out the engine a bit? lol

Head work is easy being that dad is a mechanic and I have access to tools. Lower end work would be different.

True. Probably cheaper to slap on a turbo than to get 200whp na. I wonder if this will be the first miata I can get comfortable in.

I wonder if FI would be feasible. 13. Something compression ratio.

Of course it can be turbocharged. If 12.5 can go turbo, 13 can too. It's all a matter of fuel choice and tuning.

Care to share your before and after flowbenches to show us your handiwork when it comes to performing 'basic' mods like headporting?

This isn't the old days where ports didn't match in shape at all to the gaskets or manifolds and there was massive casting flash in the ports... Modern engine designs don't show much gains when it comes to porting, usually it's from installing larger valves and cutting down the valve guides (which isn't great for longevity).

Cams aren't too bad to install, but have fun now that you've lost that torque advantage...
