I'm surprised! You have been an outspoken proponent of driver training to minimize the reliance on these aids. There are tons of car crashes every day involving cars that are equipped with traction and stability nannies. What's so hard to believe?

That he inadvertently broke the back end loose shifting from 2nd to 3rd at 20 mph with decent tread on his tires AND TC on. I'd like to see someone do this on a stock FRS.

People get in accidents with TC on, but not all accidents are the result of traction loss.

The OEM tire on this car on this car isn't exactly the most optimal tire in terms of traction,
The car being RWD also doesn't help.

However, from your descrption, it seems like your incident was caused by multiple reasons.

1. It was sprinkling. A barely wet road after being dry for an extended period of time is actually a lot more dangerous than a wet road. Since that's when all the oil embedded in the road floats up, making it easier to lose traction than completely wet road.

2. You were shifting/accelerating into a turn. I think much of the slide is probably caused by shifting... Since you only start driving
stick since september, I assuem your shifting technique isn't exactl well rounded/smooth yet.
This is fine under most cases, but when you are on slippery road. the sudden change of acceleration/deceleration from a bad shift
can easily throw the car off the road.

My advice really would be keeping the car in the same gear and speed as you enter a corner, expecially a slippery one until you get more
experienced on how to shift smoother.

1)The OP said he was going around 30 mph - unless there's 2-3 inches of standing water on the road hydroplanning at this speed is more or less impossible, so it's irrelevant to this conversation
2)When driving on a slick road (from sprinkles, with the oils, as mentioned) tread depth makes no difference. You still have all your available tread edges for grip, depth only helps with standing water

Thus, his tires most likely had no part in this.

OP, I'm glad you're okay but something isn't adding up. With traction control enabled I don't think it is possible to get the car to slide at 30 mph when making a shift from 2-3rd gear. At that speed I don't care how badly you make the gear shift - due to the lack of power the engine makes at that speed it makes no difference. If anything a choppy clutch engagement would just bog the engine at that speed.

And you cannot "accidentally" shut off the traction control (as someone suggested). If you do accidentally hit the button it activates the sport mode of traction control (and a light on the dashboard will illuminate to indicate such) however to fully deactivate traction control you have to hold down the button for at least 3-5 seconds, at which point another light will illuminate on the dashboard.

On the whole, I say good luck to the OP for his quest to learn greater car control. It's a noble crusade, one that far too few people embark upon.

Find one of these in your area. I am sure that unlike for us in Portland, you have more than one option for these kind of classes. https://www.prodrive.net/index.php?o...d=51&Itemid=61

You need to rotate those tires. Look at the difference between the head on the penny. When was your last rotation? It should be every 7500 miles..

I never lose control like people say with these tires.. I would assume they just wont admit about the tc being off.

It sounds like OP hydroplaned. If OP states he had traction control on. There is in hell no way you would spin out. I have tried seeing how my car would drift with TC on and TC off, of course in an open parking lot (Inland Empire has warehouses), only to have traction control stop me. You can feel the brakes pumping to stop you from drifting.

If OP hydroplaned then in fact TC is useless you are at the mercy of the wet road not much you can do from there. I guess it was when you counter steered you started regaining control and your TC was kicking in.

Primacys are deathtraps in the wet. Don't drive on them with TC off unless you know what you're doing. I hit a freeway onramp in LA with TC off (an uphill, blind-crest-while-making-100-degree-turn kind of ramp) and encountered a random stream of water running across the ramp-- got utterly sideways pretty much as soon as I hit the water. It wasn't a huge deal because I've had a decent amount of skidpad / autox practice, but you definitely need to be ready for that to happen if you're gonna drive on the Primacys in the wet.
