These precautions will prevent problems that can occur if you ignore your break-in period. Sure you can ignore your break-in, but I rather play it safe. This is a big investment for everyone so why not protect your investment

I've done uoa on new engines after 5k of use with normal wear. There is no arm in changing oil after 20 and 1,000 miles, there's just no benefit either. I will do a uoa on the first change of the brz too and on every couple of changes. the manufacturer plays it safe and you'll note that none of them suggest it. Break in wear is normal.

Oil filters will pick up anything big enough to do damage. If you really want to see some metallic oil check the diff after 1k

^That's another good one, Dave. I don't mean to derail this thread any further, but a good filter is just as important during break-in. We have a break-in thread, I'm sure brands have been mentioned in it (for anyone wondering).

I've never seen differential fluid during break-in, but it sounds like it'll be lotsa fun...

Never attacked you, made a statement on that "20 mile crap". When you basically called me a troll, that was much closer to a personal attack. :happy0180:

Diffs and transmissions both generate a ton of shavings during break in. A ton more than the engine will

that was the reason why I removed it but then you responded the same time. it's also very late
Manufacturers (Honda) use "break-in oil" that would mean changing the oil early wouldn't help.
Fuji Heavy Industries/Subaru now uses Idemitsu oil as factory lube which has higher levels of moly, zinc, and phosphorus.(Synthetic SAE 0W-20)
Subaru also does not use a break-in oil/additive
I'm not going lie I did a quick search for the "break-in period" for that crazy 20 miles oil change. it is in fact true to some degree

Out of curiosity for those that are getting clear bras, where do you read up on reviews for the local area erm... clear braers... I guess?

Thinking of doing more research into that.

Most good dealers do them or have a contact who comes into their shop to apply it. In all previous circumstances I've negotiated a reduced price as part of the purchase discussion. Unfortunately I won't have that leverage with my BRZ.
I may try it myself on the bumper only...depending on the cost of the sheet and looking into the actual application method. The shapes are pre-cut to fit individual cars...I would imagine that's half the battle.

OK...let me re-phrase...MINIMAL touching, driving, filling, etc. With every interaction there is opportunity for damage by the lot boy getting gas (my previous car had a wheel replaced because it was curbed during a gas fill), the over-aggressive detailer who reuses the same cloth on your hood that he used on the tires (the rake treatment) (and yes I have actually seen that happen), and of course the sales guy who wants to "see what this thing can do" before you get there to pick it up (more than likely on a car this rare).
When we bought our Highlander I specified the no touch policy and they acquiesced...it still had some of the plastic protection on the inside when we drove it home. I was able to clay it and polish it with my careful methods. To this day no swirls or dealer induced scratches etc.

I did lots of "googling". The good shops I found tend to have nice websites with lots of pictures of customer cars. I also took note of the types of cars they worked on (high-end, etc.). I then searched the installer in google to see any input from other forums about him. It took some time, but was definitely worth the effort.

Additionally, the good shops cut the film individually for each car vs. using any kits. My guy, laid out each panel and custom fit it to hide the seams within the contours of the car. You can't even notice it unless I point it out.

And that is what your filter is for. Subaru/Toyota know what they are doing. I will trust their engineers.
