It's not going to feel as tight or quick out of the box showroom trim. Little tweaks here and there, namely tires and alignment, and it becomes pretty formidable. Type-R's were pretty much ready to go out of the box anything you do to improve is just cherry.

Yea the DC2 ITR is a legend. I've been so close to buying one many times, but this time I figured a new stock FR-S would be the best choice.

If I remember correctly, the ITR was the fastest FWD car when it first came out? It was badass back then...

Might have been Sport Compact Car who did the test.

Type R DC2 is one bad assed FWD platform. It 'smoked' the crap out of the AP1 S2K.

isn't being the 'fastest FWD car' a bit like winning the special olympics? it's wrong-wheel drive. it's like porsche putting their engines in the wrong place then spending 50 years trying to hack around the problem. i guess i just don't get the point of trying to make a fwd car fast and/or fun, when both could be done better on a rwd platform that is actually intended to be a performance car from the outset.

I was rear-ended February 2013, totalling my ITR .. people that never drove one will have a hard time understanding how this FWD could become a legend.

Today I've got a BRZ, but I was sooooooo close to getting another ITR to replace my old one. I would say they are quite comparable! I'm glad to have had the opportunity to have/drive an ITR, and at the same time I'm glad the twins came out right about when my ITR was totalled.

To compare the two, I'd say the ITRs engine >> the Boxer, and along with its twin wishbone suspension puts it 100% on the same level as a twins as far as driving fun goes, the main draw of the twins being it's RWD nature. This all IMO, as we know the two cars are very similar on paper.

Yep, my Grand Marquis was quite the performance car!

The ITR is a blast to drive. It's faster than my BRZ on track too.

Hell my GS-R is faster than my BRZ on track

No doubt the BRZ is a better experience. It's not because it's RWD though, it's because of the steering and it's feel. The engine in the ITR is worlds better in how it delivers power (stock vs stock). The transmissions are close enough in feel, the 6th gear makes the BRZ quite a better cruiser though.

If it wasn't for theft concerns the ITR would be one of the best multi-purpose cars ever made. I know NSX and GT3 guys who track ITRs because they have just as much fun at 1/10th the consumables (for a GT3, NSX consumables are more or less on par with the ITR).

The BRZ is a great multi use car also. However I'm finding less and less desire to own mine. The GS-R is a better track car in it's current setup (by far) even though it has much less power, the M3 is a better DD by far also. The BRZ is now sitting, but the 26,000 miles I put on it in a fairly short time is a testament of how much I did enjoy it when I had the ITR that I couldn't drive much due to theft concerns and the GS-R that wasn't registered and was rotting away.

Thanks Dave. Your post is very useful to me. Theft is a large concern to me in down in Miami. Been a victim a couple times. Let me ask you if I can: if Lord Zenu decreed that you could only own one car for all your needs would you still go with a 13(ish) year old vehicle?

Assuming I knew the vehicle was maintained or was willing to put in money up front to get it up to par, absolutely.

I've done so before. I'd drive my GS-R anywhere (might swap out the bucket for the OEM seat until I got to the track wherever I was going ). I also just redid basically everything on the GS-R as far as hoses, gaskets, seals, bushings, etc though. Feels like a new car again. After I finished it I drove it locally for maybe 100 miles before driving it to Ohio to track it for a few days, then around doing brewery tours then back to Florida. It didn't miss a beat

The M3 I'd drive almost anywhere, but I haven't replaced enough on it to drive it to say.. Seattle from Tampa

Not true, I always held the ITR in high regard - but I've never driven one. I just didn't understand the hoopla until I spoke and did research on it.

The whole FWD, RWD and AWD bashing is hilarious. Everything, with enough money and competence can be tuned to be brilliant. The ITR is the pinnacle of making a platform great.

I don't care what you drive - as long as you are competent, hats off to you.

Maybe it's because I drive a shitbox lol...

Ah yeah, I had it backwards.

Instead of what I originally wrote:

I mean that people who have a hard time understanding how the ITR could be a legend, have never driven it.

Cheers

I really like the FRS though, which is what I drive now. With a few things done to it, it is potentially amazing. Down near sea level, if air temp is cool, it is kickass. I might do a basic "stage 1 lol" tune to get like 10hp. Otherwise I think the FRS is pretty amazing. I might also adjust the clutch pedal down, paint the wheels a solid color. These little things help the FRS come into "its own".

And then it really feels like a "rwd ITR."

Once I get a "real job" and my "6 car garage", a championship white ITR with JDM front end will definitely occupy one of those stalls. Another stall will also have a GT2RS ofc.

Ok so maybe a gsr with 200k on the clock would be a reasonable first choice over the frs if properly maintained/restored/upgraded but would you choose a GS-R over an fr-s if you had to choose just one?

Money not being a concern, that's a much tougher call. I'd be satisfied with the GS-R but I'd probably want something new. If money is a concern, no brainer, I'd rock a well maintained/refreshed GS-R all day long.

I picked up an ITR and am selling the BRZ. Financially and reliability wise, the ITR makes more sense. I'm just not willing to take the BRZ to the track anymore due to those 2 reasons. I have an old Civic Hybrid that I daily, so the BRZ was already a weekend car. It's just so nice not caring about what happens to your car every day, lol. I actually welcome people to tap my bumper to collect insurance money, lol.

I own both cars and I love driving both of them ... there will always some ppl that will bash the ITR because is FWD and never been as a passenger in one. I don't drive my ITR as much as I want to but it is a great machine.
