I ordered some General Altimax Arctics as well with 17" Sparco Assetto Gara wheels in Matte Graphite Silver from TireRack. Should be getting them today. I just couldn't get myself to order the steelies. LOL.

We just got our first snow last night. It didnt stick to the ground. I will follow up with future review. What I also did was I left my stock wheels in the back for some added weight and to keep my stupid TPMS light from coming on.

So how's the handling on those 60-series tires?

The ride is smoother since its a 60 series instead of the stock 45 and the Subaru 55 series. Handling wise, its about the same. I took a few corners going around 30-45mph, and it felt the same as with the stock 215/45 R17.

I have those too. Just mounted mine on the stock wheels, same tire size as stock tires. The reviews on these were absolutely fabulous. Don't care about performance at all on my winter wheel/tire setup, just want to be able to get from point A to point B. I also have a very steep driveway so want good winter traction.

It surprises me how many people choose to forgo lots of ice stopping power that top-of-the-line tires provide for only 1-2 hundreds more and go for a mediocre option.
Yes, the altimax is an example of the latter. So are hankooks.

Because not everyone needs a tire for ice stopping power. Being in NJ, we seldom get any ice so the need is for a good winter performance tire. That is what the Generals provide. Are they the best, no. But they offer the best "bang for the buck". Using your methodology, one could ask why would anyone buy a BRZ when they could buy a WRX with AWD and get superior performance in the winter. Different requirements for different folks.
