Just because it's full doesn't mean the oil is still any good...

7500 is stretching it on these cars, especially if you push it at all. They have no business claiming 7500mi intervals on these. 8500 is a really long time in a high revving engine.

Some disagree, 8,500 miles on an oil change shouldn't be a problem provided it's proper oil and a decent filter. Provided a non-harsh driving cycle (minimal short trips, at most moderate stop and go, non-dusty/icy climate) 10k on an oil change doesn't seem to be a problem.

I'd be more concerned if it was 1+ year between oil changes.

Edit: And it certainly isn't cause for an exploded engine unless there's some info missing.

I believe it was 9 months since the last change... Also not just the oil light flashed on, abs, battery light, engine light all occured briefly after engine went. Toyota rep is coming in to examine the engine, i will let you all know the reason for the failure.

Probably not something even related to the actual AVCS issue.

Although I would push for a new car as well if I was in your shoes.
Idk. When i did the carfax on my mazdaspeed protege it showed me new motor and tranny from dealer. Thats y i bought it. Less miles! But thats just me

I feel oil changes, aside from the recommended 7,500, should be done more frequently if the car is driven harder. As others have mentioned, I do not see why an engine should explode if someone went 1,000 miles over their recommended oil change, unless they were driving the car hard since the last oil change. My car sees 7,000 RPM about 1-2 times a week, if that and I am just doing the standard, 7,500 mile oil change. Got the car back in September 2012 and the manufacture date is June 2012. Currently at 16,600 miles and no issues *knocks on wood*

i put a nice few km on my car, all easy highway km. I went to the dealer to get a oil change a week before a 4h road trip and they couldn't get my car in for 3 weeks. The dealer in st johns could get my car in when i got there but the 4h trip would put me 250km over. I asked if this would cause a warranty issue and i got the response "shouldn't unless something happens". I asked if they could clarify and they said if i lost a motor and was over the oil by 250km they would void the warranty. I thought it was BS.

I received the 7 yr warranty extension after my first motor. Trust me, it is not that not many are blowing up, just being kept quiet except for on the forums... My first motor went at 18k, my second just went at 26k.

Some creepy crap coming out here. I just bought my FRs in sept 2014 and had an idle fluctuation only a few times. When I rolled it out of the showroom (that's a first for me and a new car ) told to bring it in for oil change at 8000 km I said it would be back at 4. I am a tech by trade and any time I built an engine I would test run it and dump the oil and filter ( and bag the crap out of it on the test drive). Then I insist on another change in 3000 km and then a schedule of every 5000 km. As I tell my customers, oil is far cheaper then an engine ( synthetic or not )
Any new design has glitches, some minor some not. I will treat my Scion like anything else, push hard for a bit then go back to normal driving except for the occasional push. VVt can be problematic if the oil is low on pressure or dirty but my experience with Toyota and Subaru in the bays has shown me they have a good thing going on. As I am not overly familiar as yet with this new co-build I now want to learn as much as possible.
Believe me if it has a problem I will be the first tech to run a diagnostic before it goes to the dealer.
I would love to get my hands on a bagged engine to strip down and inspect....I'm just that kinda guy.
