More importantly, why is someone using mirrors to back-up?
I see this a lot, especially using the center rear-view mirror. The mirrors don't give you accurate depth perception. It's because of someone using a mirror to reverse that my old Del Sol had a nice dent in the door.
Turn around and use your eyes.

Because the gate posts I have to reverse through are 1.5 inches wider on each side than the rear wheel arches! I have to electrically fold the mirrors in or they'll get taken off, luckily they are standard on UK model.

I do turn round to gauge my distance from the front of the house, although I can't see the window sill that sticks out a good 3 inches as it's under the spoiler.

At home there is a step in the wall, the lower part comes out a good 8 inches and I can't see that as it's under the line of sight out the back. For that space I inched in, checked, inched a little more, checked until I was 4 inches off the wall, then I looked around for references. A "Utility access cover" on one side of my space, when the edge of that aligns with the driver door handle, I'm in.
