I'm not so concerned with specific numbers, more just want a "peppier" engine, great handling (which it already has) and attractive aesthetics.

I know that numbers directly correlate to "feel". I would imagine a 15% increase in torque through the 4-6k range, would give me enough of an improved "feel" to satisfy me.
That's a good list and should get you to where you want to be. FYI to keep sound levels decent, go with a good header but keep your stock catted FP and see how the sound is. Then upgrade from there if you feel you can go louder. Full catless exhaust will be loud.

Thanks. I plan to get a catted and resonated front/mid pipe.

Truth. I have a list of cars to test drive and I want to drive a 2015/16 BRZ and an AT. Unfortunately, there isn't any other car quite like the twins on my list. (I understand that there are other "similar" cars like the Ecoboost Mustang, but for various reasons I have eliminated them all from consideration) My other considerations are basically commuter cars with some HP.

2017 Accord V6 coupe MT
2018+ Camry XSE MY
2017+ Golf R
2018+ WRX (again)
2017+ Lexus IS 350

good list. your right not many cars like the gt86 as far as weight goes. Miata is closest comparison power/weight wise but it is much smaller inside and if you are like me dislike fabric convertible tops for a DD.

If you are modding considering used may be a better consideration $$ wise. I went new with mine for fear of a previous owner screwing up a mod. At least I can blame myself if I screw something up

I really feel like these cars are a blank canvas with the understanding most people would mod. On your list I could only see people modding the WRX and maybe the Golf R

Idk your budget, but if you go used 86/brz stick to 2017+ Some good styling modification as well as some engine changes that should hopefully fix some issues and help durability and reliability.

Can get a used 2017 86 20k miles for around 20k, or 22k for brz. put 10k in mods and still be 5k under a new 2019 gt fastback.
I know your trying to stay NA but 8k on a turbo setup and rims/tires you’d be just as fast straight line, add suspension and some aero for another 2k and it would be no comparison all around.

Bah. Get a 2017 if you *like* the new styling or want updated electronics etc. Reliability/engine upgrades are minimal, especially if you're going to spend $$ in mods. Get a cheap, low mile, well cared for 2014 with great service records and use the extra dough for mods. 22k plus 10k in mods can get you into a Cayman S, F-Type Jag, E92 M3 etc. Just my humble opinion

you could get into those cars, but either 10+years old and/or tons of mileage. probably lots of maintenance costs, reliability issues, less of an aftermarket etc... Not saying they are bad cars or bad options by any means, great if you want a certain level of performance from the factory, but just not a clear cut better decision over a 20k super low mileage 86 with 10k in mods that you can make unique and to your taste and liking. i would be surprised if anyone else in the world had my exact car/setup. So really i am driving a 1 of 1.

Yup I agree - although the Caymans supposedly hold up pretty well. Jags not so sure but they're still pretty new (and gorgeous). Not to dilute the thread though, just giving some context. I tend to steer toward the cheaper end of things when choosing a platform to mod significantly but that's just me - the 17's are definitely sweet, new, and better electronics. And also agree on the uniqueness thing, that's what I love about modding. I'm not trying to beat a Cayman, everybody in my town has a 911, Cayman, etc. - just trying to be a little different

I definitely like certain aspects of the 17+ updates, but a low mileage 15/16 premium might be the ticket for me. A little cheaper. Taller FD for highway cruising. I prefer cloth seats. I plan on replacing many of the items on the PP anyways. And if I'm not really digging it after a few months I can just sell it without a much depreciation.

I want bulletproof reliability and low cost maintenance with enough space to store a surfboard (I've already checked that my surfboard fits in the twins). That's why Porsche, Jag, and BMW are not under consideration.

17+ did get a few reliability upgrades

So far my 17 has survived 198 hpatw and daily thrashing.

But yeah, modifications and reliability, can I get a Unicorn with that please.

Powertrain starts at 3.3, page 71.

Attached is BRZ, but most is typical to 86, power train is all typical.

Ok, that might an overstatement, but I've never had one of my cars break down. Never had a car towed, etc. I'd like keep that streak alive. That means no aftermarket FI, no American cars, no older model German or British cars.

Well researched NA engine mods, suspension, brakes, etc should not affect a cars reliability. In fact, spending time getting to know the ins and outs of the car will help spot small issues before they become big ones. Also, a mature understanding of what kind of abuse a car can and cannot handle goes a long way. Big difference between a spirited canyon run, an AutoX, and doing consecutive laps on a track.

And driving in normal city or highway traffic where the car will spend 99% of it's time
